Summer 2023 PEO Assists 19 Huskers With Post-Grad Experiences

The Post Eligibility Opportunities (PEO) program, unique to the University of Nebraka-Lincoln and its student-athlete alumni, continued to provide financial assistance to Husker letterwinners in the Summer 2023 semester. A total of 19 Husker alumni utilized the PEO scholarship for qualifying experiences this past Summer bringing the overall participant total to 411 in the program's 7 year history.

Husker PEO was established in 2015 with the mission of providing unmatched educational experiences to recent letterwinner graduates, increasing their marketability, personal development and intellectual growth. The program offers a guaranteed postgraduate scholarship of $7,500 to all Husker student-athletes who meet the program criteria, which includes earning a letter, earning a degree at UNL, and exhausting athletic eligibility at Nebraska, and can be used toward qualifying internships, study abroad, graduate school, or entrepreneur experiences. In the Summer 2023 semester, Husker letterwinners used PEO funding for 2 study abroad experiences, 2 entrepreneur experiences, 10 internships, and 5 graduate school experiences.

Husker PEO provided nearly $140,000 to Husker letterwinner alumni for postgraduate experiences during the Summer 2023 semester, contributing to the 7-year total of nearly $3 million in scholarship funding through the PEO program, further demonstrating Nebraska Athletics' commitment to the personal development of student-athletes even after their playing careers at Nebraska have ended.

Summer 2023 PEO Participant Testimonials:

"The investment level that UNL Athletics has for the entire student athlete experience is second to none. I have many friends from high school who played sports at large institutions and seemingly nobody cared for their student athletes the way UNL does. A trip like this wouldn't have been possible without UNL Athletics. The entire UNL Athletics experience for me summed up is life changing and I don’t say that in a way that’s meant to be cliche. I was a mediocre performer on the field yet every opportunity that was presented me I tried to make the most of it because without the support of UNL I wouldn’t have been able to see so many places and learn so many things about myself and the world around me. It’s hard to sum up in a short note everything that I have taken away from my years in Lincoln but it's a chapter in my life I will be forever grateful for."

"I can truly say that being able to gain this experience at a Historically Black University and everything that comes with it has enhanced me in a plethora of ways; I.e. building networks, being more outspoken, developing a multitude of skills in and out the classroom. I would encourage underclassmen to take advantage of this opportunity because it is not common for universities to offer opportunities like this, especially when leaving the university and taking part in the PEO program will only further your life experiences."

Khalil Jackson, Gymnastics, Graduate School at Texas Southern University

"I feel that my professional skills grew astronomically during my PEO experience. I learned the responsibility of showing up to work on time, being prepared for meengs, dressing appropriately, respecting others, and more. These are skills that simply can’t be taught in the classroom, but have to be learned on the job. I feel so prepared for my future endeavors because of the ways I grew my professional development skills during this internship!"
