Nebraska incoming freshman Jessica Petrie leads Australia to the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup in Madrid, Spain, July 15-23.
The 6-2 forward from Gold Coast and the rest of the Australians will battle the hosts from Spain at 1:15 p.m. (CT) on Saturday in their opening game of Group A competition at the Sport Complex Espartales in Alcala de Henares. Australia enters the tournament ranked No. 3 in the world, while Spain is No. 4.
Petrie, who will be wearing No. 17 in the tournament, and the Australians will be back in action on Sunday, July 16 at 1:45 p.m. (CT) to collide with world No. 26 Argentina at Jorge Garbajosa Arena in Torrejon de Ardoz. Following a day off on Monday, Australia returns to the court against world No. 2 France on Tuesday, July 18 at 1:45 p.m. (CT) to complete round robin play in Group A back at the Sport Complex Espartales in Alcala de Henares.
The Australian squad is one of 16 teams from around the globe to qualify for the 2023 FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup. In Group B, Team USA joins Germany, Mali and Chinese Taipei, while Group C features Brazil, Japan, Lithuania and Italy. Group D includes Canada, the Czech Republic, China and Egypt.
Play in the Round of 16 in the tournament begins on Wednesday, July 19. The quarterfinals are set for Friday, July 21, while the semifinals will be held on Saturday, July 22. The 56-game tournament concludes with the Championship Game on Sunday, July 23.
Petrie, who celebrated her 18th birthday in May, competed for the Australian U16, U17 and U18 national teams last summer. At the 2022 FIBA U17 World Cup last July in Debrecen, Hungary, Petrie averaged 12.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists. At the 2022 FIBA U18 Asian Championships last September in Bengaluru, India, she helped Australia to a gold medal by averaging 7.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists.
