Outgoing Seniors Attend Next Season Program with Jonathan Orr

On Monday April 24th, outgoing seniors from winter and spring sports gathered in the West Stadium Club of Memorial Stadium for the bi-annual Life After Sport Seminar. A total of 40 student-athletes from 15 Cornhusker teams were in attendance to hear from keynote speaker, Jonathan Orr.

As the Executive Director of the non-profit organization, Athlete Transition Services (ATS), Orr has used his experience as a former collegiate football and NFL player to build a team who is dedicated to helping college and professional athletes prepare for their transition away from athletics. The Next Season Program is offered by ATS through a partnership with the United States Marine Corps which has allowed ATS to travel across the country and deliver transitional programming and presentations to student-athletes from coast to coast.

During Monday's seminar, Orr encouraged attendees to "rip off the label" of being defined solely as an athlete and to look for activities in their lives beyond their sport that they are just as passionate about. He also provided information on potential transition challenges that any athletes face, strategies for a successful transition away from sports, and how to develop a solid game plan for the next season of their life. Attendees also had the opportunity to learn about career opportunities with the United States Marine Corps from local Marine and former collegiate volleyball player, Captain Phillip Beckmann.

An additional Life After Sport Seminar is hosted during the fall semester for all outgoing seniors from fall sports. For more information or if you have questions about the Life After Sport Seminar, please reach out to Assistant Director of Life Skills/PEO Director, Tom Lemke
