Huskers in Third on Day One of PRC Championships

Fairbanks, Alaska- The No. 6 Nebraska Rifle team is in third place after the smallbore event of the Patriot Rifle Conference (PRC) Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska on Saturday.
 
NU shot a 2,348 in the event, its second-best score of the season. Junior All-American Cecelia Ossi led the Huskers with a 590. Freshman Vittoria Watts shot a 587, junior Madelynn Erickson posted a 586, freshman Emma Rhode recorded a 585, sophomore Mackenzie Strauch shot a 582 and freshman Camilla Johannessen posted a 575. The top four scores counted toward NU's team score. Ossi's score of 590 tied for fourth place among all competitors. This qualified her for the final, where she beat Julie Johannessen of TCU, who had set an NCAA record earlier in competition.

"The team set a second-best smallbore score for the season," said Head Coach Mindy Miles. "A great match to set another impressive score at. Cecelia was a standout for the match. Not only did she shoot a 590 in qualification for the final, the top eight competed in a final a the end of the day, which took a 590 to make. She made the cut off for the gold medal match and dominated her competitor for a win over TCU's Julie Johannessen, who had shot a NCAA-record-breaking 598 earlier in the day. I'm proud of the team for staying steady for the smallbore match and meeting or beating their season averages. I'm looking forward to tomorrow, which will be two air rifle relays followed by an air rifle final."
 
No. 2 Alaska-Fairbanks is in first with a score of 2,365. No. 1 TCU is in second (2,360) and Nebraska is in third (2,348). No. 11 Ohio State (2,339, fourth), No. 7 Air Force (2,333, fifth) and UTEP (2,265, sixth) round out the field after the first day.
