"This weekend's match is our last home match and our last regular-season match before conference, qualifiers, and NCAA Championships," said Head Coach Mindy Miles. "The spring season goes by quickly, and this should be a good match to cap off the regular season. The team is eager to post a quality score that represents their season's hard work."
The Buckeyes have collected wins over No. 10 Akron and UTEP. They have averaged an aggregate score of 4,684.00 over the course of the season.
During the 2022-23 season, four returning Huskers have posted career best scores. Sophomore Payton Fry shot personal bests of 584 in the air rifle and 1,152 in the aggregate. Sophomore Mackenzie Strauch set career bests in all three events – 583 in the smallbore, 592 in the air rifle and 1,175 in the aggregate. Junior Madelynn Erickson also set three career-bests. She shot a 589 in the smallbore, a 597 in the air rifle and a 1,185 in the aggregate. Junior captain Cecelia Ossi set a personal best in the smallbore with a 592, and tied her personal best 597 in the air rifle and 1,185 in the aggregate.
Nebraska is 16-8 all-time against Ohio State. The two teams most recently faced off earlier this season on Oct. 29, when the Buckeyes won by a score of 4,708-4,699 in Columbus. Since that match, the Huskers have shot four of the top-five team aggregate scores.
Last weekend, the Huskers dropped a 4,744-4,710 match to No. 1 TCU, but Ossi placed third overall and freshman Vittoria Watts placed fifth overall. Ossi and Watts also placed third and fifth, respectively, in the smallbore. Ossi shot a 588 and Watts shot a 585. In the air rifle, Ossi was fifth with a 595. Watts and fellow freshman Emma Rhode also shot 595s. The tiebreaker was determined by the number of 10-point shots by each athlete.
The match against Ohio State is the Huskers' last match of the regular season. After this weekend, NU will travel to Fairbanks, Alaska, for the Patriot Rifle Conference (PRC) Championships on Feb. 4-5. The other members of the conference include No. 1 TCU, No. 2 Alaska-Fairbanks, No. 8 Air Force, No. 11 Ohio State and UTEP.
