More Than 100 Huskers Earn Academic All-Big Ten Honors

Nebraska had a total of 105 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Ten recognition for the fall semester as announced by the Conference Office on Thursday.

The group of Husker student-athletes includes 58 football players, 14 soccer student-athletes, 10 members of the volleyball program, 14 women's cross country student-athletes and nine men's cross country athletes.

The Nebraska honorees included two student-athletes who earned a 4.0 grade-point average for the academic year including McKenna Lovehaug, a cross country runner from Fargo, N.D., and Sarah Weber, a soccer student-athlete from Gretna, Neb.

The 58 football honorees are led by center Trent Hixson who was an Academic All-Big Ten selection for the fifth straight year. Hixson becomes the second five-time academic all-conference selection in Nebraska football history, joining Ben Stille who earned that distinction last year.

Hixson was joined on the Academic All-Big Ten list by four Huskers who earned recognition for the fourth time. That group includes defensive tackle Colton Feist, receiver Wyatt Liewer, linebacker Simon Otte and long snapper Cameron Pieper. A total of 14 Huskers football players made the Academic All-Big Ten list for the third time in their career.

Volleyball student-athletes Nicklin Hames and Kaitlyn Hord each made the Fall Academic All-Big Ten team for the fourth time in their careers, while Kenzie Knuckles and Madi Kubik earned recognition for a third year.  In soccer, Marissa Popoola is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.

Men's cross country runner Bailey Timmons earned Academic All-Big Ten for a fifth season, with Ryan Eastman earning recognition for a fourth time and Jerry Jorgenson is a three-time academic all-conference selection. On the women's side, Nebraska had a trio of three-time Academic All-Big Ten honorees including Jade Hallgrimson, Taya Skelton and Abby Volkmer.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be on a varsity team (as verified by being on the official squad list as of Nov. 1 for fall sports), have been enrolled full time at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
