Postgame Quotes vs. Illinois

On how the defense played overall
“I thought the defense played good as a unit. We just have to limit the big plays and wrap up and get guys to the ground. I think we played good, but we could play better.”

On Illinois’ first touchdown and what went wrong
“We were just supposed to play through it. They just ran a little mesh route and folks got picked off. We just got to be more locked in and know the keys that are coming for the play and be better.”

On Illinois’ second touchdown of the first half
“That was something different. It was just that we got picked off. That’s all it was.”

On the momentum swing after his fumble recovery
“We tried to stay together. The offense is sometimes struggling and we try and pump them up. It’s always one team. We try and pick it up for the other side. It wasn’t a problem for the defense. We like going back out on the field and giving the ball back to our offense. Just staying positive on the sideline.”

On the importance of holding them to field goals
“Just keeping them out of the end zone is a great thing for us. Making them kick those long field goals and just trying to get the ball back to our offense I would say is a win for us.”

On if it’s a punch in the gut for the team when the quarterback goes down
“It’s always next man up for any position. We have faith in Chubba (Purdy) and Logan (Smothers). We see those guys every day. It’s always next man up mentality. They know that if Casey (Thompson) goes down we need them go get the job done. We’re going to keep believing and trusting in them, and we are all going to stay together.”

On how frustrating it is losing the game and how to send positive messages
"Just getting in here, watching the film, correcting the mistakes and just looking at the negatives and the positives. In games like this, you make mistakes, you make plays, but you have got to limit the mistakes. That's all, we got to come in here and make sure we get it done right."
