On Illinois’ defense
“They’re a really good defense up front. They mainly run that odd-front defense, and they’ve done a really good job this year at stopping the run, especially in the Big Ten West. You’ve got to win up front if you want to be able to run the ball. They’ve done a good job with that and they’ve won some games doing it.”
On Illinois’ pass-rush defense
“It’s five guys up front, so they’re really just facing their best five guys against whoever they play’s best five guys. On their edge guys, their quick guys, their big guys are physical. They like to do a lot of power moves. We’ve got to be really keened in on our pass technique and our run technique this week.”
On Nebraska's pass-protection through the first seven games
“Not as good as we want it to be. Coach (Mickey Joseph) has made that a statement so far is that we want to be better. We know we can be better than that. We have to do a better job of protecting Casey (Thompson) or Chubba (Purdy) or Logan (Smothers) or whoever is back there throwing the ball to our skill guys. When we are able to give them time, we can cause some damage.”
On the difficulty of playing multiple positions in a game
“It’s difficult, but we practice for it and we got schemes where Coach (Mark) Whipple wants to put tackles over, whether it’s in run or pass. You’ve got to always be on your toes. When playing in the Big Ten, you never know when someone could go down and you have to move spots. Everybody’s has to be ready.”
