Mickey Joseph Postgame Quotes (OU) - 9-17-22

Mickey Joseph
Nebraska Interim Head Coach
Postgame Quotes vs. Oklahoma (Sept. 17, 2022)

Opening statement

“First of all we are going to get this press started. This is on me. This is on me, not my players not my assistant coaches. I have to do a better job and I will. I have to do a better job. I thought they fought today and I would like to thank the fans, they hung in there with us and we fed off their energy. We did not do enough. They beat us in all three phases of the game, offense, defense and special teams, but this comes back to me. It is not my kids' fault. It is not my assistants’ fault. This is on me. I have to accept responsibility for it and I have. We are going to get better next week. We have eight games left and we are going to get ready to win some games.”

On what he could have done differently
“I guess I did not do enough last week to get them ready. I have to get back, and we have to do some individual work, some more drill work next week and less teamwork, and get some fundamentals straightened up. We have to continue to tackle. I did not do enough tackling and I have to do more. I have to get them better in that part.”

On gap integrity on defense
“You watched the game. You saw it. No it was not there, but that is not on them, that is on me.”

On what can be done in six days
“A lot.”

On having a bye week
“The bye week is going to help because we can re-evaluate some players. We had some young kids that had some snaps and that had some good snaps, I thought. So we will look at some young players, and see if they can help us. If they can help us, we will increase their reps.”

On if the game surprised him
“Yes, it surprised me, but I wanted them to continue to fight and they did. But it fell off. But you know what, like I said, this is on me. I have to fix this problem.”

On Oklahoma’s defense
“They showed more eye and more blitzing. We prepared for it, but we just did not execute it.”

On offensive lineman Teddy Prochazka
“Teddy is going to redshirt. Teddy is done for the year. He is going to redshirt.”

On the offensive line performance
“We need to work more fundamentals with them this week. We have to find a five, a good combination of five of them, and see how it works. We have to look at some young kids. We have to look at some backups and see if they can help us.”

On the skill level comparison between Nebraska and Oklahoma
“I think we need to do a better job at recruiting. They have better skill players. We have to do a better job, but we have really good skill players also. We just have to get them to execute.”

On quarterback Casey Thompson’s performance
“I have to go back and look at the film, but nobody played very good with a score like that, so I would say that he did not play very well.”

On why Casey Thompson left the game
“We needed to get Chubba (Purdy) some reps.”

On how Chubba Purdy played
“I thought Chubba played okay, when he got in there. He made some mistakes but I thought he was aggressive and he gave us a chance to sustain drives.”

On the task ahead
“We are going to go back and look at this film, and we are going to dissect this film, and we are going to find the kids that were doing what we were asking them to do, and the kids that can tackle, and that can block, and that can do the right thing, and we are going to increase their reps if they were not a starter.”

On keeping players mentally up after the start to the season
“I think they are going to be okay. I think they are going to be okay because they do not have to hold on to this loss. This is on me, and I told them that. I told them that this is my job to get them better, and we will get them better.”

On the bye week
“More drill work. More bump combo. More nine-on-seven. More turnover drills. More drill work and less teamwork because the teamwork does not matter if the individual work is no good.”

On running out of the tunnel as the head coach
“It felt good until the game started.”

On the first offensive drive of the game
“We started fast. We have to be more consistent though. I have to get them to be more consistent.”

On how to be more consistent
“Like I said, we have to look at some more players. We have to look at the roster and who can help us. We have to work some fundamentals. We need to clean up some fundamentals.”

On considering changes above the player level
“No. I cannot see that right now. I do not know if I will be able to see that tomorrow, but I cannot see that right now.”

On gap integrity of the run defense
“We have to be in our gap and we have to tackle. It is simple. You have to be in your gap and you have to tackle, and it was not there today.”

On giving the team confidence
“They started out fast, and now I need to get them to be consistent with it, and to come out and do it aga)in.”

On how game day was different for Joseph
“It was different. It was different from being the receivers coach to running the whole show. Like I said, this is on me and I need to get better as a head coach.”
