On mindset during the third quarter

“The same thing that I was thinking the whole time down here. We came down to play as well as we could and win a football game. That's how we prepared for it and I was pleased with how our guys were playing. Scoring right before halftime, getting momentum, getting down by 10, and getting it down there for a field goal. We made a good play on a turnover and were able to run it in. I was really pleased with our effort and I was really proud of them at that moment.”

On playing against a Big Ten team
“They have good talent. It’s a Big Ten team. They’re going to be tough to tackle in space. They go out and make a really good play to get it out of the end zone. That's a huge play in the game in third and long. Our coverage was decent. Could it always be better? Sure. We want it to be better but we made plays. The longer we're on the field, it's going to be more difficult but we want to tackle better and play better in the fourth quarter. We have to learn from this.”

On the offensive line
“I thought we ran the ball with some consistency and even pop some big ones. With three freshmen out there I thought they really held their composure. Once again, we had a couple of five-yard penalties that hurt us with third and long. When you're against a big physical front like that is not a good situation to be in but I thought Tommy did a great job of scrambling and getting away from pressure, throwing the ball away, and keeping us in manageable downs. I thought he really played an excellent game today and we're going to learn from it. We'll get better because we played against a very good opponent.”

On playing a variety of players on both offense and defense
“I think it's good for the team. We want to rotate guys and give them opportunities. It's going to be a long season and you take it one game at a time. We talk to our guys constantly about being ready for their opportunity and going out and doing our very best. That's why you practice. We want a lot of guys ready to play and that's going to help us as we move through the season. It's got to help us next week.”

On Isaiah Smith
“I think he's going to be fine. It's a little warm out there today. When he popped the big run, I think that caught up to him a little bit because he had been working hard for most of the day. He had a hard time recovering and that's where we have to keep developing depth. We have to use our roster and keep working and getting as many guys to contribute as we can.”
