Quinton Newsome
Nebraska, Defensive Back
On the defensive struggle
“We did not play well as a defensive unit during that game. In the first half we had big mistakes that led to touchdowns, and we cleaned it up in the second half, but we have to start out better.”
On the transition to playing in Ireland
“I feel like we transitioned well and got a good amount of sleep that we needed. I feel like we got back on schedule. Everybody got their legs back. Treatment is a large part of that, making sure that if your body's hurting that you get in there and take the time to make sure everybody's feeling good.”
On keeping the team energized after a loss
“I would say it is not an issue. We went ahead and put that game behind us. We're moving on to this next week and everybody's all in. Everybody’s ready to play the next game and get a win and just get this thing rolling.”
On if it was harder to go to Ireland or to come back
“I would say coming back probably would have been more of an adjustment just because we got back so early in the morning so I would say that.”
On where the defense can improve in the secondary
“Knowing your assignment, just communicating better. And just like I said, knowing what you're supposed to do every snap, and communicate to make sure everybody's on the same page.”
On calls coming in late
“I wouldn’t say that was a big issue. I mean it's football. It happens. The coaches have a job just like us, and I wouldn't say that was a problem for us. I would say that just happened, really once or twice. That’s just a thing that the guys have to get used to because sometimes the offense is moving really fast and we have to see personnel and this and that. Sometimes you just have to be ready for when the ball is snapped.”
On tackling
“Just finishing tackles. I mean, it was the first game you know. Coaches want to keep our body fresh so coming into that game, we weren't doing too much tackling just making sure everybody was good physically. But I would say yes that we need to work on our tackling.”
On playing at Memorial Stadium
“I will say that there’s nothing like playing at Memorial Stadium, just the energy, being able to play on this home field, and the amount of fun that they're going to have when they get out there. It’s just exciting being able to be out there, and I think that helps to bring a lot of energy to the team. Everybody knows it's our house and we want to defend it.”
On the new starters
“I feel like they played a good game. It's just little things that they need to work on. I was really happy seeing those guys be able to go out and fly around. The new guys have a high ceiling, they have a lot of potential and they’re just young players, but we’re fully confident in those guys and we know that they'll get the job done.”
On Northwestern’s big pass play
“That was just busted coverage in the back end. It was just miscommunication and not having your eyes on the right person at the right time. It was just a bust overall.”
On not taking North Dakota lightly
“We shouldn't take any opponent lightly. We’re trying to get momentum back so we know this team is going to come in and give it all they got, and this is going to be a good game. We know that nobody's going to let down for us so we need to take every week the same as we would at the beginning of the season, with the first game.”
