Caleb Tannor
Nebraska, Edge

On getting back to Nebraska
“I’m feeling good putting some more work in. Yeah, I feel good. I feel good right now.”

On his evaluation of the first game
“I want to see us bounce back and put that one behind us. Unfortunately, it didn’t go the way we all wanted it to go. I take full responsibility for that as a leader. Like I said in the last interview a couple days ago when we win, it’s going to fall back on the captains and when we lose it’s going to fall back on the captains. I take full responsibility for that. I didn’t get my guys correctly prepared for what was to come. We’re here to work and get better. It’s a new week.”

On improving defensively
“Probably just fixing the corrections from the last game. That’s always the first step. You come back Sunday and Monday and fix the corrections and see where you’re wrong. We could always do better running to the ball. That’s number one. That’s defense right there, running to the ball. We could always do better at tackling. Just getting my guys ready to practice, going hard from the jump, Monday through Saturday, that’s what it is practicing like a pro. And that’s what I’m trying to get my guys to do.”

On the difference between fall camp and the game
“I don't feel like it was different. It wasn’t different. We went out there, we worked hard. We went all in. We just fell short. Like I said, I take full responsibility. We just didn’t do enough. It wasn’t enough what we did. We’re here to work and get better. Don’t let it happen again. That’s it.”

On if the defense was fatigued late in the game
“I don’t think we were fatigued. We were probably fatigued mentally. People got tired. People weren’t doing their job. Everybody has to do their job. Everybody has to tackle and get to the ball. That’s how it is right now. I don’t know if you all are trying to find an answer to why we lost. It’s as simple as that. We have to play some better defense, aggressive defense. That’s what it is run to the ball. It’s that simple. Make the tackle.”

On if he was surprised the defense didn’t get to Northwestern’s quarterback
“I was surprised because I know we have a good group. We have a good defensive line group. We have a good pass rush group. So yeah I’m surprised. But like I said, we’re here to work. We’re going to keep on working and we’re going to keep on getting better. We’ll keep on making sure we’re getting better and better every day. That’s all our focus is on right now.”

On playing in Memorial Stadium
“It means everything.”

On what he tells guys who haven’t played at Memorial Stadium
“Get ready for the ride. Get ready for the experience. I’ve been through the ups and downs in that stadium. I tell the guys to have fun. To go out there and play hard. That’s really all I can tell them and get them ready throughout the week. On Saturday we’re going out there and having fun. We practice harder during the week than in the game because the game is supposed to be easy. During the week it’s supposed to be harder than the game.”

On what he learned about moving on after a loss
“I’m not going to lie, this one was kind of hard. For some reason this one was kind of hard. Usually I’m onto the next one. This one is emotionally hard because we put that grind in. I feel like this team right here is like ‘we’re the one to bring Nebraska back to where it was’, so it’s hard. But like I said, I take full responsibility for that. And coming with that we have to get back to work. We don’t have time to sulk about it and cry about it. We have to get back to work and that’s all I’m worried about right now.”

On his growth since he started at Nebraska
“Having an open ear and listening to people. Not being hard-headed. Some folks are hard-headed and they don’t want to listen. They think they’re right all the time. I just had to realize that I’m not right all the time and that I do have some stuff to fix. That’s what I came to do. With time comes maturity, mentally. I just matured and grew up. I came here as a young head and now I’m here as an old head.”

On if something clicked when he realized he had to grow up
“When I realized I’m the old head on the defense. I’m not going to sit here and listen to some young guys tell everyone what to do. That’s a good thing, though, but leadership is different. You have to lead your troop, you can’t have everybody lead it. You teach the leaders how to lead, and once they see how to lead, then the younger group will see how to lead. It’s the foundation of leadership.”

On if he learned anything about himself as a leader against Northwestern
“Probably that I need to learn how to get my guys more prepared to win. When I tell you I take full responsibility, I feel bad. Because I feel like the guys deserve it all. We went out there in fall camp and spring, we killed it. It was a tough one, but I promise we’re back to work. It was back to work on Saturday when we landed.”
