Nick Henrich Quotes - 8-21-22

Nick Henrich
Nebraska Linebacker

On being named a captain
“It was a surreal feeling. I was pretty speechless. It was a great honor. Any time your teammates think that highly of you it’s pretty special. It’s something I will cherish for the rest of my life, but we've got a lot more work to do so it’s exciting.”

On what it says about three out of four captains being defensive players
“It says we are doing a great job of building the defensive culture. There’s a lot more guys that could’ve been named captain that weren’t, obviously because there’s only four guys. Guys like Ty Robinson, Luke Reimer and Myles Farmer are really good leaders as well, so I think we are doing a nice job of building a nice defensive culture.”

On leadership from past players
“I think Luke (Reimer) and I especially were really lucky. When we came in there were senior linebackers who showed us how to really be a college football player and how to do things on and off the field. When Will (Honas) left, he was the last old guy leaving, so the torch was being passed down so those guys all taught us so much. I am super grateful for all of them.”

On captains setting the tone for the rest of season
“I think you have to just keep doing what you’re doing. Your teammates voted you as a captain for a reason. Just have to keep being yourself, nothing really changes. The stakes are high, and we have to keep working and we all know that, just need to hold everybody accountable.”

On the importance of the first road trip
“We have really emphasized that this is a business trip, and obviously it is a huge honor to experience another culture like we are going to and going to another country because a lot of guys haven’t been able to do that. We all know the only thing we are going to do is to win a football game.”

On Northwestern’s running backs
“They have good backs. They are always a well-coached team, and we are expecting a downhill run game and a lot of things out of them. We will be ready to go, and we know they are going to bring their best, so we need to bring our best.”

On learning from last year’s week zero game
“I think we are all just ready to go as a team. Last year was really hard for a lot of people, but we took that and learned a lot of lessons from that, and we are going to take those over to Ireland with us.”

On Caleb Tannor
“I don’t think I have seen more growth from a single person. He’s done such a good job of holding guys accountable and bringing energy and being a great leader. We love to see that out of Caleb. We love to see him as a team captain, and he deserves it. He came in and never was a huge problem guy, but he was never really a leader. He has really developed well into that and took off from a leadership standpoint. It’s been cool to see. He’s got that insane competitive drive and spirit that is contagious to a team and we can really feed off his energy.”

On Nebraska’s offense
“Those guys have been doing a really good job. It’s been good to experience new looks and they show us a lot of stuff. The running backs have been running the ball very hard and I have been very impressed with that side of the ball.”

On his personal goals
“My goals are to really help us win games however we can. Being a leader was probably my main goal I wanted to do this off-season, to develop myself as a leader. Unity Council helped a lot, working with the guys a lot, and trusting myself.”
