Three Gymnasts Named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars

The Nebraska men's gymnastics team had three student-athletes named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars, the conference announced Thursday afternoon. Moritz Mueller and Dylan Young all earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors for the second time while Sam Phillips was a first-time honoree. 

Junior Sam Phillips led the group, earning his first Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honor. Phillips is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and has earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll six times. Studying hospitality, restaurant and tourism management, Phillips earned first-team All-Big Ten honors this year after finishing sixth in the all-around competition at the Big Ten Championships. The Woodland Hills, Calif., native was also named an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar award winner this year. 

Junior Moritz Mueller earned his second Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honor. Studying business administration, Mueller is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and has been named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll six times. Mueller has earned the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award and is a two-time CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete. 

Junior Dylan Young rounds out the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honorees. This marks Young's second time being named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. A finance major, Young is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, a two-time CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete and has been named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll six times. 

To be eligible for Big Ten Distinguished Scholar selection, student-athletes must be a recipient of Academic All-Big Ten recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled full-time at the institution for the entire previous academic year and earn a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year.
