52 Huskers Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars

Lincoln - A total of 52 University of Nebraska student-athletes were recognized recently, earning Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar awards for the 2021-22 season. 

Nebraska's 52 honorees, which included 37 females and 15 male honorees, were featured in Diverse Issues in Higher Education. Nebraska nearly doubled its total of 30 from the 2020-21 season. The honorees represent 15 different Husker sports.
To be eligible for the annual Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar awards, diverse student-athletes must have reached at least sophomore standing academically, maintain a cumulative 3.50 GPA, and be active on campus and in the community.

A total of 23 student-athletes were first-team selections, including 12 men and 11 women. The men's honorees included Mark Foelbaek (Golf), Tom Westenberger (Golf), Jake Bonnay (Gymnastics); Moritz Mueller (Gymnastics); Samuel Phillips (Gymnastics), Victor Moreno Lozano (Tennis), Matthias Algarin (Track and Field), Tyler Drew (Track and Field), Micaylon Moore (Track and Field), Passmore Mudundulu (Track and Field), Lorenzo Paissan (Track and Field) and Terrol Wilson (Track and Field).

The women's recipients include Mi'Cole Cayton (Basketball), Alexis Buchert (Bowling); Amara Smith Speight (Bowling), Clara Colombo (Gymnastics), Martina Comin (Gymnastics), Dakota Chan (Soccer), Natalie Cooke (Soccer), Madesyn Ronquillio (Swimming), Monica Aldrighetti (Track and Field), Jamieson Battistella (Track and Field) and Kayla Ca­ffey (Women's Volleyball).

In addition to the 23 first-team selections, Nebraska also had 12 second-team honorees, 15 third-team members and two student-athletes who were fourth-team recipients. 
 
Diverse Magazine first established the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar awards in 1992 to honor undergraduate students of color who exemplify the standards set by the tennis legend. A scholar and an athlete, Ashe sought to expand opportunities for young people.
