Nebraska rifle captain Cecelia Ossi will head to Colorado Springs, Colo., to represent the Huskers at the 2022 NCAA Rifle Championships.
Ossi will compete as an individual in the smallbore event on Friday, March 11. She will be in the second relay at 1-2:45 p.m. central time.
She will join Kaylene Castillo (Memphis), Andre Gross (Akron), Victor Kiss (Ohio State) and Claudia Sigel (Army West Point) as the individuals selected. All five individuals competing were not part of the eight teams that were selected for the championships.
Ossi looks to cap off a season full of personal records and top finishes for the Huskers. This is her second NCAA appearance, as she competed as part of the Husker team which finished sixth at the 2021 NCAAs.
"Over the past three weeks since qualifiers, I've been diving deep into fixing issues while also focusing on exemplifying my strengths," Ossi said. "I've been enjoying the preparation process and am very excited to represent Nebraska next week in Colorado! I'm very thankful for my coaches who have helped prepare me, as well as my teammates who have given me so much encouragement and support!"
Ossi has set personal records in both the air rifle (597) and the smallbore (589) this season. Her 597 score in the air rifle ties the Nebraska school record. She also posted ten top-five overall finishes, including three first-place finishes. She finished first in the smallbore five times this season and three times in the air rifle.
Her averages in both events led the team – she averaged a 586.17 in the smallbore and a 590.75 in the air rifle. Her average aggregate score was 1,172.8. Her smallbore average is the highest average posted by a Husker, breaking the record that Misty Chanek set in the 2005-06 season (585.92).
"I am looking forward to Cecelia's opportunity to post a good score. She's been working hard these last couple weeks to ensure a good performance," head coach Mindy Miles said. "I hope she gains a great experience next week that will translate to her overall goals as an athlete."
Emily Cheramie was selected as a smallbore alternate in the event that one of the selected individual qualifiers cannot compete.
