On Tuesday, March 8th, 33 student-athletes considering a career in healthcare attended the Healthcare Careers Prep Event in Memorial Stadium. Attendees from 12 different Huskers teams heard from industry experts on a variety of topics related to healthcare careers and how to stand out as an applicant for graduate school. The panel consisted of five professionals each with a different background and expertise area in healthcare.
Topics discussed during the event included the overall application and admissions process, advice on letters of recommendation, the importance of job, shadowing, and volunteer opportunities on applications, preparing for interviews, opportunities for scholarships and healthcare careers with branches of the military, and the future of healthcare professions. The panel experts also discussed how attendees can combine their student-athlete experience with a well developed resume of activities to help them stand out in the application process.
Student-Athlete Testimonials:
"My biggest takeaway from the event was the importance of intentionally building relationships with professors on-campus so that when it comes time to start filling out applications, I can feel comfortable going to them to ask for a letter of recommendation. This is something I had never really considered so learning this information will be very beneficial when I begin applying for Psychology programs." Khalil Jackson, Men's Gymnastics
"What I found really beneficial is that each speaker focused what we go through everyday as student-athletes and how we can highlight that in the application and interview process. It was helpful to learn different aspects of the application process and how to sell our student-athlete experience to make us an attractive candidate for medical school." Abbey Schwarz, Women's Soccer
"I learned more about the application process and the important things to remember for the field that I am currently interested in." Katie Kuenemann, Women's Gymnastics
"It was really helpful to learn a few things that are not necessarily common knowledge in the application process like understanding what is helpful to include in applications and what to avoid. The event also provided an opportunity for great connections when it comes to shadowing and volunteer opportunities." Sadio Fenner, Men's Cross Country
