Huskers Take Down Bulldogs At Home

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska men's tennis team (2-2, 0-0 Big Ten) took down the Drake Bulldogs (0-2, 0-0 Summit League), winning 4-3 at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center Saturday night.

The match began with doubles play. Rudra Dixit and Shunya Maruyama started things off with a decisive victory in the No. 2 spot against Drake's Markus Bolin and Matija Matic, 6-2. An emphatic last singles point sealed the match for the Huskers. Roni Hietaranta and Victor Moreno Lozano were down 5-2 in the No. 3 spot against the Bulldogs' Matt Clegg and Reid Jarvis, before fighting back to make it 5-4. They eventually fell just short and dropped the match, 6-4. In the final doubles match, Drake took home the doubles point after Oliver Johansson and Jeremy Schifris fended off a comeback attempt to defeat William Gleason and Nic Wiedenhorn, 6-4.

In singles action, Maruyama knocked off Jarvis in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to tie the match at one. In the No. 2 spot, Johansson took down Wiedenhorn in two sets, 6-1, 6-4, to take the lead back for the Bulldogs, 2-1. Hietaranta won his singles match in the No. 4 spot against Olle Sonesson Lidholt, 6-2, 6-2, to remain unbeaten in singles action on the year at 4-0. Lozano rebounded from his doubles loss to gather the third point for the Huskers as he defeated Markus Bolin, 6-3, 6-3. Securing the match victory was Calvin Mueller as he downed Evan Fragistas in the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 7-5, giving Nebraska its second win on the spring season. In the last singles match, Schifris defeated Gleason, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), (10-5).

Up next, the Huskers will go on the road to take on Denver next Sunday, Feb. 6 at 2:30 p.m at the Denver Tennis Park.
