On running game moving forward
“The guy we just had up here (Travis Vokolek) I think he brings a really good dynamic to our running game and that’s in the way that he’s able to block and I think he helps us out in that department. There’s certain elements we were able to get going that we hadn’t in games past that we’re definitely going to carry over.”
On opinion about having two tight ends on the field
“Well I love it. It’s really not my job to say what personnel go out and what we do here and there. My job is to do so that’s what I do. I will say I love having twelve personnel and I love having Travis and Austin too. They are huge targets for me and two reliable guys so no complaints from me.”
On how important winning the next game is
“We definitely need it. Going down the stretch here every game is a “need-win” for us here. That’s how we’re approaching it. We know that any given Saturday we can win those games so we need to approach each game with the same intensity we did with the Oklahoma game.”
On what the team has done well
“There’s a couple things. I would say that a couple of things that really need to be cleaned up are just finishing drives. They need to be cleaner and less penalties at times and not shoot ourselves in the foot. But I will say we’ve had more explosive plays this year and that’s a big component of our offensive that has gotten a lot better. Just give credit to those guys on the outside. We have some really talented and skilled guys that can go make plays.”
On encouraging the kicker (Connor Culp) after tough loss
“He knows how much we need him and last year he was an all big ten kicker. The guy is a stud. The guys haven’t lost faith in him and I haven’t either. He’s a man and I know he’s going to come back around and be the same guy that he has been for us previously.”
On Luke Reimer continuing to come back
“I love Reimer. The guy is very consistent. A consistent teammate and consistent player. He shows up every day and knows what he’s doing and plays his tail off. I was really excited for him to finally get that opportunity and go out there and show what he can do.”
On previous Colorado game
“I remember losing for sure. That’s a tough game to stomach but really not what I’m thinking about going into this week. Obviously I have knowledge that he was the coach of that team but I think this is a very different team and they’re wearing different colors and not really comparable.”
On talking to offensive lines about trouble with penalties
“I remember that I definitely addressed it after the game but those guys know that it’s unacceptable and that we all have to get it cleaned up. It’s on all of us and not just on them. So me going up and screaming wouldn’t necessarily get the outcome that we want in that situation so it’s about communicating and we have to be better. Simple as that.”
On anything that he would have done differently
“Definitely. Ideally we get a real play off the ground there and get some positive yardage so that it’s not a second and ten and second and long in a kind of goofy situation there. Just communication for all of us. We all have to be better on that one.”
On Martinez’s thoughts on Michigan State
“They’re a hell of a team. They’re a tough team and they’re going to fight. They’ve played really well so far this year and I’m excited to go play a night game and go play in a different atmosphere. I’ve never been to East Lansing. I know that the guys are excited about it. It’ll be a fist fight.”
On reflecting on latest accomplishments and records
“There’s a lot to do right now. There will be a time for reflection and I’ll have that time for sure but right now it’s all about executing and there’s a lot more that I want to accomplish. Stats are cool but at the end of the day it's about winning. So we got that to do.”
