Foelbaek Wins Nebraska Open

Husker men's golfer Mark Foelbaek fired a five-under-par 67 in the final round to storm to the individual title in the Wells Fargo Nebraska Open on Sunday at Elks Country Club in Columbus.

Foelbaek, a senior from Jelling, Denmark, closed the 54-hole tournament at 204 (-12), jumping from third to first after his best round of the tournament on Sunday. Foelbaek opened his championship performance with a 69 (-3) on Friday, before firing a 68 (-4) on Saturday.

Foelbaek held off professionals Rylee Reinertson and Ryan Vermeer, who tied for second at 205 overall.

Foelbaek began his final round with a 35 on the front nine, and then closed strong to secure the victory. He posted birdies on 12 and 13, before a bogey on 14 left him at 2-under for the day. The Husker senior bounced back with an eagle on the par-5 15th, backed up by a birdie on 16 to reach 12-under for the tournament. He closed with two pars to capture the tournament win.

While Foelbaek took top honors, he was far from the only Husker to produce an outstanding performance in the Nebraska Open, as seven of Foelbaek's teammates finished in the top 20 in the 95-golfer field.

Fellow Husker senior Tom Westenberger tied for fourth at 206, just two strokes behind Foelbaek. Westenberger closed the tournament with a 69 (-3), after opening with a 69 on Friday before adding a 68 on Saturday.

Freshman Jack Lundin added a terrific tournament performance, including a five-under 67 in the final round to finish in a tie for seventh at 208 (-8). Lundin opened with a 68 on Friday, before managing a 73 on Saturday.

Junior Caleb Badura gave the Huskers four golfers in the top 10. Badura finished at 209 (-7) after carding rounds of 68, 71 and 70 in the three-day event.

Sophomore Will Marshall and senior Branden Meyer just missed top-10 finishes, tying for 11th with three-round scores of 210 (-6). Freshman Gentry Scheve finished 16th at 212 (-4), while fellow freshman Jeremy Sisson rounded out the Huskers in the top 20 in a tie for 19th at 214 (+2). Sisson notched the best individual round by a Husker on Sunday with a 66 (-6).

Overall, five of Coach Mark Hankins' Huskers played their way to the top of the leaderboard at some point in the three-round tournament, including Lundin, Scheve, Marshall and Westerberger.

Three former Huskers also finished in the top 20 of the Nebraska Open, including Jace Guthmiller (T11th, 210), Judd Cornell (T19th, 214) and Jay Cottam (T19th, 214).
