Eugene, Ore. -- Shunya Maruyama extended his winning streak to three matches for a team-best 4-2 overall singles record, but the Nebraska men's tennis team (1-6, 0-0 Big Ten) struggled against the Oregon Ducks (8-2, 0-0 Pac-12) in a 6-1 loss at the UO Student Tennis Center on Sunday morning.
The freshman from Nagano, Japan, defeated Jesper Klov-Nilsson, 7-6 (4), 6-1, at the No. 6 spot for the Huskers' sole win of the match. Maruyama now holds an 11-6 overall singles record, after posting a 7-4 mark in the fall.
Nebraska and Oregon started off the day with doubles competition. Klov-Nilsson/Riki Oshima defeated Maruyama/Victor Moreno Lozano at No. 3, 6-2, while Patrick Cacciatore/William Gleason fell to Brandon Lam/Charles Roberts at No. 2 by the same margin. No. 9 Joshua Carlton/Ty Gentry led 5-4 over Andre Saleh/Albert Sprlak-Puk at No. 1 before the match was called.
In singles play, Emmanuel Coste knocked off Sprlak-Puk, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot before Luke Vandecasteele beat Cacciatore, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 5 position.
No. 29 Carlton clinched the match for the Ducks with a 7-5, 6-3 upset over Moreno. Oshima overcame Saleh at No. 4, 6-4, 7-5, while Gentry defeated Gleason, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot.
Nebraska will return to action next weekend with a trip to Texas, as the Huskers take on UTSA on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. CT, before playing the Texas Longhorns on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. CT.
