The Nebraska softball team (3-2) will travel to Atlanta, Ga., Feb. 14-16 for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Hosted by Georgia Tech, the site will feature two ACC schools in Georgia Tech and Boston College and two Big Ten teams in Nebraska and Iowa. Every team will play two games against each school in the opposite conference.
The Huskers will begin the weekend on Friday when they play Georgia Tech at 3 p.m. CT. On Saturday, NU faces Boston College ( 9 a.m. CT) and Georgia Tech (11:30 a.m.). The Big Red finishes the weekend on Sunday against Boston College. First pitch for the game is set for 9 a.m. CT.
Scouting the Opponents
Georgia Tech comes into the weekend with a 1-3 record. In the opening weekend, the Jackets hosted the Buzz Classic. Georgia Tech lost their first three games of the season to UAB and Washington (twice) before beating Ohio in its final game of the weekend. Despite dropping its first three games, Georgia Tech scored six runs against No. 1/2 Washington in its first game against the Huskies, before losing by just one run (2-1) in the second game against Washington.
Bailee Zeitler leads Georgia Tech with a .462 batting average. An all-ACC freshman pick in 2019, Zeitler had six hits, three runs, one double and one RBI in the opening weekend. Zeitler has started all four games for the Jackets in 2020. An all-ACC pick in 2019, Cameron Stanford is expected to help the team again in 2020. Stanford started all four games and is hitting .308 with one home run and a team-best four RBIs. NFCA All-Region honoree Tricia Awald will be a key player as well for the Jackets. Awald has made four starts and is hitting .267 through the first four games of the 2020 season.
In the circle, Georgia Tech returns five from last season and didn't lose any of its pitching staff. Morgan Bruce saw most of the action last weekend, pitching 14.0 of the team's 28.0 total innings. She has a record of 1-1 and an ERA of 5.50. She also has a team-high seven strikeouts.
Boston College enters the Big Ten/ACC Challenge with a record of 2-3. The Eagles won their season opener against Long Island University and then won the final game of the weekend against Georgetown. BC lost to Florida Gulf Coast, Connecticut and Delaware over the weekend. At the plate, Ellie Mataya was impressive over the first weekend. Mataya started all five games and went 7-for-17 (.412) with one run and one double. However, as a team Boston College is hitting just .171 and is averaging less than two runs a game.
In the circle, Susannah Anderson has carried most of the weight so far this season. She has pitched 21.1 of the team's 34.2 innings and has a team-low ERA of 0.66. She went 2-1 over the weekend and raced up 25 strikeouts in three appearances. Against Georgetown, Anderson threw a no-hitter in 7.0 innings. She finished with a career-high 10 strikeouts and no walks. She had just two hit batters.
