Rio Grande, Puerto Rico - Leah Herzog and Kate Smith each put up rounds of 73 to lead the Nebraska women's golf team on the second day of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic on the River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club on Monday.
Herzog, a freshman from Red Wing, Minn., closed the second round in a tie for 12th overall at 145. Smith, a senior from Detroit Lakes, Minn., climbed nine spots on the individual leaderboard to a tie for 34th at 149.
Sophomore Kirsten Baete from Beatrice, Neb., produced a four-over-par 76 for the second straight day to enter tomorrow's final round in a tie for 49th in the 84-player field. Senior Haley Thiele (Wahoo, Neb.) completed Nebraska's team score on the day with an 81. She sits in a tie for 72nd (161) through 36 holes.
As a team, Nebraska finished the day at 303 (+15) and enters the final round in a tie for 12th with Iowa State at 607. The Huskers are three strokes ahead of Big Ten counterpart Maryland (610) and four strokes ahead of another Big Ten foe, Indiana (611).
Texas Tech surged from seventh to first in the team standings with a five-under-par score of 283 on Monday, after posting a 296 on Sunday. The Red Raiders (579) enter the final round with a two-shot lead over Big 12 rival Oklahoma State (285-296-581). Virginia Tech (288-295-583) sits in third, while the hosts from Purdue and fellow Big Ten school Northwestern are in a tie for fourth at 584.
Northwestern's Irene Kim (69-71-140) and Virginia Tech's Alyssa Montgomery (72-68-140) are tied atop the individual leaderboard at four-under-par. They own one-stroke leads over Northwestern's Kelly Sim (72-69-141) and North Carolina State's Monika Hartl (73-68-141).
The Lady Puerto Rico Classic concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 5:30 a.m. (CT). Live scoring will be available from GolfStat.com.
