Lincoln, Neb.,--The Nebraska women's tennis team is set to welcome The Air Force Academy Falcons and the Creighton Bluejays to the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center for back-to-back Saturday matches. NU will start the day with Air Force, followed by Creighton at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
Nebraska will look to remain undefeated following Saturday's contests. With two dominant wins over Sacramento State and Florida International, Nebraska is off to a hot start in 2020.
Scouting Air Force
Air Force enters Lincoln with a 3-1 record, including wins at Colorado and Northern Colorado at home.
In her 22nd season, the Falcons are led by Head Coach Kim Gidley. In 2019, Gidley guided Air Force to a 22-3 overall record, tying the most wins in program history. The Falcons had a 4-1 mark in the Mountain West Conference, earning them a piece of the Mountain West title.
Senior TJ Fumagalli has played a vital role in the recent success of Air Force. In 2019 she was named Mountain West All-Conference Singles while serving the role of team captain. Fumagalli was 18-1 in dual singles matches, including a 2-0 conference record. Partnered with Kristin Kerrigan, the duo went 15-4 in duals and earned Mountain West All-Conference Doubles honors.
Historically, Nebraska leads the series over Air Force by a margin of 10-1. In 2019, the Falcons defeated Nebraska for the first time, topping NU 4-3 in Lincoln.
Scouting Creighton
The Creighton Bluejays head into Lincoln holding a 2-1 record and are set to take on Air Force Friday evening at the Dillon Tennis Center. The Jays are coming off back-to-back at-home wins over North Dakota and Missouri State.
Creighton is led by Head Coach Tom Lilly, who has been with the program for 30 years, five of those as a player. In 2019, Lilly coached CU to a 9-13 record while going 2-3 in a tough Big East Conference.
The Bluejays welcome three freshmen to their 2020 roster, including former Nebraska high school tennis standouts Julia King and Kate Krueger.
Historically, Nebraska leads the series over Creighton 30-0. In 2019, NU defeated the Jays 6-1 in Lincoln.
Husker Freshmen Off to Strong Start
The freshman class is causing trouble for opponents in both singles and doubles. Chloe Kuckelman holds a 2-0 record playing out of the No. 2 and No. 4 singles spots as well as a 2-0 record in doubles. Last Friday, Chloe and twin sister Ellie paired up to get a win out of the No. 3 doubles spot. Ellie Kuckelman has also racked up two singles wins coming out of the No. 4 and No. 6 spot.
Kristina Novak and Isabel Adrover Gallego saw their first action of the season against Florida International. Novak, the Radovljica, Slovenia, native earned a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles with Claire Reifeis as well as a 6-4, 6-4 triumph out of the No. 2 spot over FIU's Sandra Bozinovic.
Adrover Gallego teamed up with Hayley Haakenstad at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-2 and closing out doubles competition for NU.
