Lincoln, Neb., -- The Nebraska women's tennis team returns to action on Friday to take on the Florida International Panthers. The Huskers are coming off a dominant season-opening sweep over Sacramento State on Saturday.
Historically, this is the first meeting between NU and FIU.
Scouting Florida International:
The Panthers head into Lincoln coming off a 4-1 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes in Orlando, Fla. FIU got out to a quick start to claim the doubles point followed by three singles wins to earn the match victory over the Hawkeyes.
At the No. 1 doubles position, sophomore's Basak Akbas and Kamila Umarova took down Iowa 6-4. In 2019, Akbas and Umarova earned First Team Doubles All-Conference as freshmen while going 8-2 on the year and earning a season-high ITA doubles ranking at #64.
Last season, FIU went 11-8 including a 4-1 Conference USA campaign. Notable wins include a 4-3 triumph over Yale and a 4-1 win over UTEP in the first round of the C-USA Championships.
In her seventh season, the Panthers are led by Head Coach Katarina Petrovic. With FIU, Petrovic holds a 93-47 record overall.
Reifeis and Aragon Look to Continue Doubles Dominance:
In 2019, the duo of Claire Reifeis and Jessica Aragon teamed up to go 13-6 playing mostly out of the No. 2 spot. Last week, the pair moved to the No. 1 position, leading the match 5-3 at the time the doubles point ended.
Kuckelman Twins Find Success on Different Courts:
Chloe and Ellie Kuckelman found both singles and doubles success on Saturday. In their 2020 debut, Chloe teamed up with Emma Worley at the No. 3 spot, earning a 6-3 win. At the No. 2 spot, Ellie and Hayley Haakenstad raced to a 6-1 victory. In singles competition, Chloe earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot while Ellie won 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot.
