The Nebraska men's tennis team competed in the third and final day of competition at the Big Ten Individual Championships at the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln on Sunday.
The day began with extra doubles matches. Five Huskers competed altogether. William Gleason and Patrick Cacciatore were knotted 6-6 with the Wisconsin duo of Daniel Nuzhny and Scott Sculley before triumphing 7-3 in the set tiebreaker. Bradley Mittleman was slated to compete with Andre Saleh, but an injury to Saleh meant Mittleman competed alongside Ohio State's Jacob Wareti instead. The ad-hoc pairing defeated Jarreau Campbell and Kazuki Matsuno of Michigan State, 6-2. In the final doubles match of the day involving Nebraska players, Chester Wickwire and Shunya Maruyama fell to Michigan State's John Carlin and Carson Gates, 6-2.
Three Huskers saw action when play shifted from doubles to singles matches. Patrick Cacciatore was thwarted in his attempt to reach the back draw finals by Iowa's Joe Tyler, who defeated the South Carolina transfer 6-3, 6-4. Andre Saleh was also poised to compete in the back draw singles semifinals, but an injury prevented him from competing on Sunday. In extra singles matches, Shunya Maruyama bested Kazuki Matsuno of Michigan State 6-1, 6-2, while William Gleason lost a back-and-forth battle with Northwestern's Steven Forman. Overall, Nebraska earned four doubles victories and 11 singles victories on the weekend. Five Huskers (Cacciatore, Gleason, Lozano, Maruyama and Sprlak-Puk) earned two singles victories apiece throughout the tournament.
Overall, Head Coach Sean Maymi was pleased with how the weekend went.
"When [the Big Ten conference] told us we would have the opportunity to host [the Big Ten Individual Championships], I thought it would be great for our guys since we can play at home and play on our home courts," Maymi said. "With these types of tournaments, the plan is to get a lot of matches and watch how the guys handle different pressure situations. [Assistant coach] Tom [Boysen] and I were able to assess the guys in a lot of different scenarios and [now] we know some things we need to work on. Being a team full of freshmen and sophomores, we're only going to continue to get better."
The Big Ten Individual Championships marked the end to the fall season for the Huskers. NU will resume competition Jan. 18 when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores.
