Huskers Find Singles Success in Day 2 of the Big Ten Individual Championships

The Nebraska men's tennis team concluded day two of the Big Ten Individual Championships at the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln on Saturday. The day began with doubles matches for both the main draw and back draw. The focus then shifted to singles matches in the afternoon.

The Huskers competed in five doubles matches in the morning. William Gleason and Victor Moreno Lozano were defeated by Connor Johnston and Kristofer Siimar of Michigan, 6-4. Andre Saleh and Chester Wickwire fell in a tiebreaker to Jarreau Campbell and Kazuki Matsuno of Michigan State, 7-6(6). Bradley Mittleman and Albert Sprlak Puk fell to Wisconsin's Daniel Nuzhny and Scott Sculley, 6-4. Sprlak Puk found success with Patrick Cacciatore in a close match-up against Northwestern's Dominik Stary and Trice Pickens, taking the match 7-6(8). Cacciatore then teamed up with Shunya Maruyama to defeat John Carlin and Carson Gates of Michigan State, 6-3.

The Huskers then moved into singles action. Gleason was the lone remaining Husker in the main draw but ultimately fell to Dominik Stary of Northwestern, 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. The Huskers found success in the back draw portion of play, however. Cacciatore continued his impressive day by clinching a win over Ohio State's Jacob Wareti, 7-5, 6-2, advancing to the back draw quarterfinals. Sprlak Puk also contributed to the Huskers effort, defeating Abhijeet Joshi of Northwestern, 7-6, 7-5. Victor Moreno Lozano continued the Husker win streak by besting Wisconsin's Gabriel Huber in a tiebreaker, 6-3, 6-7(10). Shunya Maruyama was defeated by Michigan State's Carson Gates, 6-2, 6-3.

In the quarterfinals, Saleh took a commanding victory over Morgan Lohan (Iowa), 6-2, 6-3. Cacciatore also had a dominant victory in the round, defeating Russell Burdusco of Northwestern 6-2, 6-2. Both Saleh and Cacciatore will advance to tomorrow's back draw semifinals.
