Huskers Conclude Day 1 of Big Ten Individual Championships

The Nebraska men's tennis team took part in the first day of the Big Ten Individual Championships at the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln on Friday. The tournament began with two round of doubles in the morning and was followed by singles play in the afternoon. 

NU competed in several tight doubles contests. Tim Seibert and Jacob Wareti of Ohio State defeated sophomores William Gleason and Patrick Cacciatore via tiebreaker, 8-7(6). In their follow-up match, Gleason and Cacciatore lost to Michigan's Connor Johnston and Kristofer Siimar, 7-5. Sophomore Bradley Mittleman returned to action after missing last weekend's ITA Central Region Championships, but he and partner Chester Wickwire could not defeat Michigan's Connor Johnston and Kristofer Siimar, and fell 7-5.

The Huskers then shifted their attention to singles and found success. Shunya Maruyama scored an early victory for Nebraska, defeating Anthony Pero of Michigan State, 6-3, 6-4. Victor Moreno Lozano also advanced to the Round of 16 with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Martin Vilella (Wisconsin). Albert Sprlak-Puk emerged victorious after a back-and-forth match with Northwestern's Russell Berdusco (6-4, 6-7, 7-5). Will Gleason also had to go three sets, but was able to earn a first-round victory, beating John Carlin of Michigan State 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.

In the Round of 16, two Huskers took their matches to three sets. Albert Sprlak-Puk suffered a close loss to Wisconsin's Robin Parts (4-6, 6-2, 6-1) while Will Gleason triumphed against Gabriel Huber of Wisconsin in one of the day's most closely-contested matches. Gleason advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals by winning 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(3).      

Action resumes Saturday morning beginning at 8 a.m. with the doubles quarterfinals followed by singles quarterfinals.
