Former Nebraska track and field athletes Marusa Cernjul (Slovenia) and Chad Wright (Jamaica) will compete over the next week at the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
Cernjul will begin competing for Slovenia in the high jump on Friday, Sept. 27, at 10:40 a.m. in the preliminary round. The finals of the women's high jump are slated for 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30.
Cernjul finished 21st at the Olympics in 2016, and she was 10th at the European Indoor Championships this year. Her lifetime best is 6-4 (1.93m) and her best mark in 2019 is 6-3 1/2 (1.92m).
The Celje, Slovenia native, was a first-team All-American in the high jump for Nebraska at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships, placing seventh. She also won the Big Ten Outdoor title as a freshman in 2012. Cernjul's personal-best in college was 6-1 1/4 (1.86m), which ranks fourth in NU outdoor history.
Wright will start with the discus preliminary round at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28. The finals of the men's discus are scheduled to commence at 1:15 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30.
Wright took 17th at the IAAF World Championships in 2015 and captured the discus title at the Jamaican National Championships in 2014. His lifetime best is 214-9 (65.47m) and his best mark in 2019 is 213-8 (65.13m).
The Kingston, Jamaica native, was an NCAA Champion in the discus for Nebraska in 2012. Wright finished his collegiate career as a four-time first-team All-American in the discus and won the Big Ten outdoor crown as a senior in 2014. Wright's personal-best in college was 209-10 (63.96m), which ranks fifth in NU outdoor history.
