Pre-Northern Illinois

On the third quarter
“I noticed that we were stalling a little bit there and it became apparent, and I knew that we needed to get a touchdown. But, there are several things that needed to happen, and I think that key thing is getting that first down and getting those chains moving and kind of getting the flow of the offense back. I think that is a critical thing.”

On Scott Frost’s play-calling
“I trust Coach Frost. Whatever he is calling, I know there is a thought process behind it and one that I side with. I trust him as a play-caller and what he is calling and it is my job to execute it. Whether he wants to throw the ball [or] run the ball. We as players have to - and I think that is something we have put an emphasis on this week - make plays work. Go out there and make them work. Don’t just go through the motions. Go in and make that play work - each play, every down - so we can move the chains.”

On the getting more receivers involved
“I think that is a good point and something that we are trying to do. It is my job to spread the ball around and I go through my reads or progressions or whatever it may be and I throw to the open guy. I wouldn’t say it is something that is intentional on my part, but it needs to be made a point to get some other guys involved, too.”

On his process of reviewing games
“I would say it is the same. I watch the entire game, beginning to end regardless of if we win or lose. I think that is how it should be. Mistakes happen when you win and when you lose. There are things you need to review and need to learn from. I think when it is a loss and it’s a few plays that might have made a difference, you go back and you focus on those a little bit more, but in general, watch the whole game.”

On specific plays
“There were a few critical ones. I think I held too long on a read and it might have caused a sack.  You know, a play here and there, I don’t want to get too into it. There are a few ones that I think if I would have made a different decision, they would have resulted a little bit different for us.”

On running back Maurice Washington
“We were kind of tuned up all week in practice to give that ball there and have Maurice get around the edge. That's just how it goes sometimes.”

On bouncing back after the Colorado game
“I would say there is no exception, 24 hours, put it behind us. It is what it is, and we have Northern Illinois this week and they’re a good football team, so we are going to have to come prepared and come to play.”

On difficulties in running the ball
“I wouldn’t necessarily say that. I think it is something we need to improve on, there are no questions about it. Our running backs, our line, I know that and I think it is something that we can all make a difference in improving - running the ball there. But, it is going to be a work in progress and something we are going to have to keep on building on each week, each day in practice. It is something that we can improve, and I think that we will.”

On how he has advanced since last year
“I think it is a process and I think last year I got better at it as the year went on. I think I am still continuing to improve. I do feel like I am a lot better this year than I was last year. That is something that Coach (Mario) Verduzco - me and him constantly work on - trying to get better at being quicker and more efficient. It will be an ever-going process.”

On Northern Illinois
“They are a good football team. They came in here and beat us a couple of years ago and they are not a team to take lightly. They are a physical, hard-nosed defense, and I think we are ready for the challenge.”

On if he watched the Northern Illinois game in 2017
“I did. I was at home.”

On what he thought of the Northern Illinois game in 2017
“They’re a good team like I said. They won’t be taken lightly.”

On getting the team’s attention
“I shouldn’t have to tell the team anything. We should be ready to play. Coach Frost does a great job of that, of preparing us and all our coaches. We will be ready. Nothing should be said. I don’t feel the need to, and I think the guys are ready to get after it.”
