Former Husker Valerie (Calberry) Bercier captured the Professional Women's Bowling Association Rookie-of-the-Year award, when the PWBA named its annual winner on Sept. 7.
Bercier, who ranks 15th on the PWBA money list with a total of $16,150, came to Nebraska from Brampton, Ontario, Canada. She was a two-time All-American for the Huskers from 2009 to 2012. She helped Nebraska to four consecutive NCAA semifinal appearances, including a national championship as a freshman in 2009.
Bercier's rookie season on the PWBA Tour included a career-best fourth-place finish at the PWBA Sonoma Country Open. She opened the 2019 season with seventh-place finishes at the Nationwide PWBA Greater Cleveland Open and the PWBA Lincoln Open. Most recently, she finished 21st at the QubicaAMF PWBA Players Championship in Raleigh, N.C., which helped her lead all tour rookies in points on the season.
Bercier, who now makes her home in Spring Lake, Mich., has represented Canada in international competition since 2013. A nutrition, exercise and health science major at Nebraska who earned her bachelor's degree in December of 2012, Bercier opened Berberry Health & Wellness in 2017. In addition to her professional career on the lanes, she is a registered dietitian and certified health coach.
