On what the defense could have done better
“Like you said it was a pretty good showing by the defense. We felt like we could have done a lot of things better. Communication was one of them. First game communication of people training their ears and also people understanding they have to be demonstrative when they are giving out their calls and stuff like that. And then just first game tackling. You don’t go live a lot in practice, so just first game tackling and really that is it, I think.”
On his use of the hashtag #revengetour last night
“That was something that we started talking about after the season was done. That is really just a vengeance tour is the way of saying we have to come back. Everyone we play we have to show everyone our best football, basically that is what it means. So we have to give it to them. It is not just at one particular team. It is at every team we play, we have to give them the most respect and we are going to play them that way every time we face them. Giving them that respect, preparing for them like they are the best team we ever going to face. Them coming out there and showing them that brand of football, matching that brand of football, that is what we are trying to do. We are trying to play our best football for every team we face.”
On the defense’s attitude
“I mean it was a 3-1 or something like that. We want TFLs, we want sacks, we want turnovers. That is what this defense is about. We want no gains, stuff like that. Maybe sometimes I am mad for no reason, I am just fired up about that but, yeah you don’t want anyone to get a yard on you so maybe that is why.”
On the offensive performance against South Alabama
“First bad day by any of us. First, we are defense so we are supposed to have the offense’s back. At the end of the day that is why you rely on having a great defense, a good defense. I am happy that happened on Saturday because now the offense knows that we have their back. No matter what, we have their back and they are going to play their best. That is not even close to what they have shown. Don’t think that is the offense you guys are going to get this year. That is their worst football, but watch. When you see their best football and you see us, the defense play our best football, it is going to be an explosion out there. That is what we are looking for this week, and we want that combination of both sides playing their best football and just making an explosion out there and just scoring points, turnovers, sacks, etc., and stuff like that. To answer your question, I just went out there, I went to their side and I just tried to hype them up. I trust Adrian (Martinez) to lead his group and stuff like that, but to get in their head and give them some motivation is what I did.“
On today’s offense in practice
“They came out ready. Coach Frost said they had a great practice and they came out there with urgency and they were ready to line up and they were playing fast. That is what it takes. Monday you have to show that effort. Monday practices - you don’t just come out there and half it. You have to go out there and run to the ball and run your place as fast as you can run it.”
On Colorado’s offense against Colorado State
“It is different. It is not like last year where it was spread out, mostly. But then again they want number two (Laviska Shenault Jr.) to get the ball. It is all about him. They have used him in different ways just like they did last year. Whether he is a tight end, a running back, or a receiver he is going to be all over the place, and they are going to feature him and give him the ball in any which way they can.”
On last year’s Colorado game
“First, we didn’t play the Akron game, adrenaline went to waste that game. I just remember being with my guys and the defense, and how hungry we were. Feeling everyone’s anticipation around me. I can feel that everyone is locked in on their keys and just attack. I just remember when the ball snapped, every play everything was just whoa. I just felt like we were in the backfield as soon as possible. That’s what we want to do. We want to get after it. We want to get sacks, tackles for losses and turnovers.”
On how the defense is practicing
“I think we had a better Monday practice than we had last week, and that is great. Again, we didn’t play our best football. That was not our best football. Every week we try and better ourselves. There is going to come a game where you will see our best football and just know that Monday no matter how good it was; it wasn’t our best football. We can’t get complacent off of that, because we could get better.”
On playing with linebackers Collin Miller and Will Honas
“I felt like they did really well. I was really happy how they communicated out there, and how they ran to the ball. That’s the biggest thing. The energy they both brought. I am just happy to have those guys because they bring a lot to this team. They make me better.”
On the fan environment and the scene that is set for Saturday
“I am just so excited for this away game. The Sea of Red is coming to Boulder. A lot of anticipation, a lot of history. It’s going to be a game that people are going to be locked in from Colorado and us. We are going to want to give it to each other. I am just ready for it.”
On a sense of how many fans are going to be there for Nebraska
“I don’t know. I put a tweet out I think yesterday. A lot of people said they coming. Coach (Barrett) Ruud told me the loudest game he has ever been too was when he was young, but he said it was a Colorado/Nebraska game. That emotion that the fans had during that time during that game I am sure that a lot of people are going to come out and watch us play this time from Nebraska.”
On Barry’s emotions when the game is close in the fourth quarter
“I am happy that it happened early. Like I said, it’s a lot of lessons and a lot of situations that game that made our defense better. I am happy that we were in those situations early in the season so we know how to handle that later in the season. Like you said, sudden change – we have to make that stop, we've got to make it happen. It don’t matter how that happened or what caused us to be in a bad spot. It just matters, you’re the defense your number is called are you (are) going to make that stop.”
On Martinez getting hurt last year against Colorado
“I love Adrian. That is my quarterback. I’m not really going to comment on that because honestly that doesn’t matter for this year. With that being said, we are just ready for them.”
On last year’s Colorado game atmosphere
“I was just, honestly, I didn’t know it was going to be that energetic. I don’t know if it’s just because we didn’t play Akron but that game was hype. The competition level was high. I think both sides competed at a high level that game. Plays were being made all around. This year I am just ready to have that same feeling, and I’m ready to attack with this defense.”
