Four Huskers competed in the ITA summer series tournament at the University of Minnesota this past weekend. The Huskers faired exceptionally well, taking home both the singles and doubles championships.
Seniors Claire Reifeis and Hayley Haakenstad, sophomore Jessica Aragon and incoming freshman Ellie Kuckelman, represented Nebraska at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
In singles, Hayley Haakenstad took home the championship for the Huskers after defeating future teammate, Ellie Kuckelman.
The Huskers had other notable wins in singles play. Jessica Aragon defeated teammate and overall No. 1 seed of the tournament, Claire Reifeis in the quarterfinals, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4).
In a quarterfinal matchup, Ellie Kuckelman defeated Cammie Frei of Minnesota, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4). Last season, Frei played out of the No. 4 spot in the singles lineup for the Golden Gophers. Kuckelman went on to upend teammate Jessica Aragon 6-2, 6-1, earning a place in the championship match.
In an all Nebraska singles final, the No. 4 seed of the tournament, Hayley Haakenstad, defeated Kuckelman 6-3, 6-4. The Chanhassen, Minn., native claimed the singles title without dropping a single set throughout the weekend.
In doubles, Haakenstad teamed up with Claire Reifeis to sweep the field. The senior duo defeated Lambert and Frei of Minnesota 8-4 in Sunday's championship match.
