The Nebraska men's tennis team has added Japan's Shunya Maruyama to the Husker roster for the 2019-20 season, Head Coach Sean Maymi announced on Monday.
A talented competitor who has won four ITF junior tournaments as a doubles player since 2016, Maruyama is an experienced international player with a chance to improve his game at Nebraska.
“Shunya has a good fundamental skill set and is a hard worker," Maymi said. "The fact that he has had some international exposure in ITF junior tournaments is a good thing as well. We think his game will continue to grow during his time as a Husker.”
Maruyama, from Nagano, Japan, advanced to the round of 16 at the All-Japan Junior Tennis Tournament in the 18-Under division. He was also a finalist in singles at an ITF junior tournament in 2018.
“I am excited to go to Nebraska and play for the team," Maruyama said. "I think Nebraska will be a very comfortable place for me since the weather and atmosphere is similar to my hometown of Nagano.”
Maruyama becomes the sixth newcomer to Nebraska's 2019-20 class, joining five Huskers who were previously added to the roster.
