Several Husker Rifle team athletes and coaches had a strong showing at the USA Shooting National Championships in Fort Benning, Georgia, this past week. Competing were members of the team and coaches Rachel Martin and Mindy Miles. Both coaches had excellent performances, with their top-five finishes qualifying them for the ISSF World Cup in Rio, Brazil.

New head coach Rachel Martin, an NCAA champion and a seven-time All-American for the Huskers from 2014 to 2017, placed fifth in Smallbore with a 2330, earning a place on the Rio World Cup team. New assistant coach Mindy Miles placed fifth in Air Rifle to book her place on the World Cup team as well.

Current Husker shooters also impressed during the event. Elena Flake, a sophomore, shot a personal best in both her Air Rifle events: 614.7 on the first day, and a stellar 618.5 on the final day. Flake also recorded personal bests in both her Smallbore events. Kinga Aletto, also a sophomore, shot a personal best of 1140 on day 1 in the Smallbore event.

Incoming freshman Macey Way placed 8th in Air Rifle, and shot a personal best on day 1 (1160) in the Smallbore event. Samantha Peterson, a returning All-American senior, placed 9th in the Smallbore event with a 2310. Emily Cheramie showed solid performances in both guns with a 1229.7 in Air Rifle and 2287 Smallbore.

The ISSF World Cup, with Martin and Miles qualified to compete, is scheduled for August 26-September 3 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
