Lincoln Neb., - The Nebraska men's golf team finished in second place at the Husker Git-R-Done Invitational on Saturday at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb. This weekend’s tournament marked the first Division I tournament hosted by NU in Lincoln since the 2005-06 season.
NU fired a 586 (+18) over two rounds to take second place, trailing only the #38 Arkansas Razorbacks, who took first place after shooting a one-under-par 567. South Dakota State (+25), Nebraska Omaha (+30), Drake (+37) and Creighton (+39) rounded out the field.
“We left a lot of shots out there today as a team,” Head Coach Mark Hankins said. “We didn’t manage a few of the holes out there and it cost us some big numbers. It was the difference between competing for a team title and a distant runner-up finish. We don’t have any excuses, we just dug ourselves too deep of a hole after round one.”
The Huskers top finisher was graduate transfer Jay Cottam, who shot fired a two-round score of 143 (+1) to finish tied for fourth. The fourth-place finish is Cottam’s top finish since he’s been at NU.
“I’m very proud of a Jay for posting a top five finish,” Hankins said. “He hung in there, played smart and patient all day and put together a good tournament.”
Jace Guthmiller finished second place among all Huskers and tied for 10th overall after shooting 148 (+6) over 36-holes. Tanner Owen and Mitch Klooz (+8) finished tied for 12th while Jackson Wendling tied for 26th (+12) to round out the starting lineup.
The Huskers also had five golfers compete individually, led by freshman Tristan Nelko, who tied for 18th overall after carding a two-round score of 152 (+10). Junior Cameron Jones tied for 26th with Jackson Wendling (+12) in his third appearance of the spring.
Patrick Clare, Sean Song and Dylan McCabe each made their spring debuts today. Clare and Song (+15) tied for 34th while McCabe came in 36th after firing a 159 (+17) across 36 holes.
