Iowa City, Iowa -- The Nebraska women’s tennis is set to begin a three-match stretch on the road to close out the regular season. The Huskers travel to Iowa City, Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes for a noon matchup on Saturday. On Saturday, April 20, Nebraska will travel to Minnesota and then to Wisconsin on the 21st to close the season.
Last Time Out:
Last weekend the Huskers picked up their first Big Ten win over Maryland, 6-1. After locking down the doubles point, five Huskers picked up singles wins to close out the match. On senior day, NU fell to Rutgers, 4-3. The Big Red dropped the doubles point but picked up three singles wins, falling just short of two straight home victories.
Claire Reifeis, Jessica Aragon and Hayley Haakenstad all went 2-0 last weekend with wins at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Scouting the Hawkeyes:
Iowa has a 12-8 record on the year with a 4-4 mark in Big Ten competition, which is a notable improvement from their 2018 record of 10-14. Iowa freshman Samantha Mannix, a Nebraska native who competed at Elkhorn South High School, has made a notable impact in the Hawkeye lineup. Mannix is currently 4-6 out of the No. 1 singles spot and 9-6 in doubles play.
Iowa is led by third-year head coach Sasha Schmid. Schmid was a four-year letter winner for the Iowa tennis program from 1992-1996 where she was named team MVP in 1996.
Historically, the Hawks lead the all-time record over Cornhuskers by a margin of 17-10. In 2018, NU took down Iowa, 4-0 at the Dillon Tennis Center.
Husker Hits:
-Junior, Claire Reifeis put together yet another impressive weekend on the singles court. Playing out of the No. 1 spot, Reifeis won both of her matches against Maryland and Rutgers. The Indianapolis, Ind., native moved to 16-6 on the season, the best record by any Husker in 2019.
-Alongside freshman Jessica Aragon, Reifeis has found great success on the doubles court as well. The No. 2 duo teamed up to take down the Maryland team of Zoe Kulkarni and Amber Policare, 6-3, helping the Huskers to their first Big Ten win.
