Lincoln Neb., - The Nebraska men's golf team is set to host the Husker Git-R-Done Invitational on Saturday, April 13 at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb. This marks the first Division I tournament hosted by Nebraska in Lincoln since the 2005-06 season. The six-team tournament will consist of two rounds on Saturday, April 13. The first round will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m., while round two will get underway at 12:30 p.m. The second round will be continuous play.

 

The Field:

Arkansas, Creighton, Drake, Nebraska-Omaha and South Dakota State will join the Huskers in the field. Each team will have five-player lineups, with the lowest four scores counted each round. 17 individuals will also compete in the tournament, making a 47-player field.

 

Hear from the Huskers:

For the first time in over a decade, the Huskers will compete in a tournament on their home golf course. Head Coach Mark Hankins is excited for the opportunity that awaits his team.

 

“We definitely aren’t taking this for granted,” Hankins said. “You have to respect your home golf course. Firethorn is a great club and a great place to play.”

 

Huskers junior Tanner Owen, who leads the team with a 72.76 stroke average this season, is looking forward to getting out and playing in a home tournament for the first time in his college career.

 

“It’s something we haven’t experienced yet at Nebraska, at least since I’ve been here,” Owen said. “It’s going to be great to go out and play at the golf course that we’re at on a consistent basis.”

 

Hebron, Neb., native Jay Cottam is excited to have his family and friends come out to see him play. Since most of the team’s tournaments are out west and down south, they haven’t been able to get out and see him play since he’s been a Husker this spring.

 

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Cottam said. “My family doesn’t get to see my play a lot since it’s pretty costly to travel across the country. Just being able to play in front of them in person will be nice.

 

Mitch Klooz, a graduate transfer from Liberty University in Richmond, Va., talked about getting ready to play this weekend at Firethorn.

 

“Our coaches have done a great job of getting us prepared for whatever comes our way,” Klooz said. “We’re not going to be phased by the weather or the competition coming it. I just can’t wait to get out there and play.”

 

Husker Hits:

-Tanner Owen was named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week on April 13 after firing a 54-hole score of 214 (+4) to tie for 19th in a field of 132 golfers at The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford University. It’s the first time a Husker has won Big Ten Golfer of the Week since Jackson Wendling did so on Sept. 4, 2015.

-Effingham, Ill., native Jackson Wendling finished first among Huskers at the Lamkin San Diego Classic after firing a 219 (+3) to finish in a tie for 20th overall. Wendling led all Huskers with 13 birdies on the tournament. It’s his first top-25 finish since the 2017 Bayou City Collegiate Classic, when he finished in a tie for 22nd after shooting a 218 (+2).

-Redshirt junior Mitch Klooz will make his first stroke play tournament appearance of the year for NU. He last participated at the Big Ten Match Play Championships, where he went 2-2 in four matches.

-Five Huskers will compete individually this weekend, and two will be making their first appearances of the spring. Senior Song Song and sophomore Patrick Clare will both be competing for the first time this spring. Each competed in one tournament this fall. Clare competed at the Fighting Irish Classic where he shot a 221 (+8) over 54-holes.
