Minneapolis, Minn. – The Big Ten Conference released the final brackets for the 2019 Big Ten Wrestling Championships today. Session I and II will be held Saturday (10 a.m. and 6 p.m.) while Session III and IV will be on Sunday (12 p.m. and 3 p.m.) at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.
125: Zeke Moisey held his #7 seed and will face Indiana’s Elijah Oliver, the #10 seed at 125 pounds in the first round.
133: #13 seed Jevon Parrish will take on Penn State’s Roman Bravo-Young of Penn State, the #4 seed. Bravo-Young defeated Parrish back on Jan. 20 in NU’s dual in State College.
141: Chad Red Jr. will battle Rutgers’ 141-pounder Peter Lipari in the No. 8/9 seed matchup as both held their seeds. Red defeated Lipari by major decision, 16-5, in their first matchup on Feb. 1.
149: Unseeded at 149 pounds, Jordan Shearer will take on Iowa’s Pat Lugo in the first-round tomorrow morning. Lugo is the #3 seed in the weight class and defeated Shearer in an 8-4 decision on Feb. 3 when the Huskers hosted the Hawkeyes in a dual at the Devaney Center.
157: No. 2 seeded Tyler Berger held his seed and earned a first-round bye. He’ll take on the winner of Ohio State’s Ke-Shawn Hayes and Rutgers’ John Van Brill. Berger has defeated Hayes, the No. 7 seed, twice this season. He also defeated the No. 10 seed, Van Brill, in a 7-3 decision on Feb. 1.
165: NU junior Isaiah White is the No. 4 seed at 165 pounds and he’ll take on Michigan State’s Austin Hiles, the No. 13 seed. White defeated Hiles last year in a 14-6 major decision during his team’s dual against the Spartans.
174: Redshirt freshman Mikey Labriola held his #4 seed and will battle 13th seeded Josh Ugalde of Maryland in round one. The two did not wrestle during NU’s Jan. 18 dual at Maryland as the Terps took a forfeit at 174 pounds.
184: Farmington, Minn., native Taylor Venz drew 14th seeded Brendan Devine of Northwestern in the first round of the Big Ten Championships tomorrow. Venz, the #3 seed at 184 pounds, defeated Devine in a 15-0 tech. fall back on Jan. 6.
197: The No. 5 seed at 197 pounds, Eric Schultz will take on Maryland’s Niko Capello in the first round. Capello, who is unseeded, was beaten 26-11 by tech. fall by Schultz on Jan. 18.
HWT: Junior David Jensen, who is making his second Big Ten Championships appearance, drew a first-round bye. He’ll take on the winner of Penn State’s Anthony Cassar (#2 seed) and Purdue’s heavyweight, Jacob Aven, who enters the tournament unseeded.
