Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska women’s tennis team returns home to the Dillon Tennis Center for matchups against the Indiana Hoosiers and the Purdue Boilermakers. The Huskers and the Hoosiers are set to play Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. CT. NU then takes on Purdue on Sunday at noon.

 

Last Time Out:

The Big Red is coming off an 0-2 weekend that includes a 5-2 loss to No. 14 Ohio State at home and a 4-3 loss against Penn State on the road. The Huskers were unable to secure the doubles point in either one of their matches but had a strong showing in singles. On Sunday morning’s loss to Penn State, NU finished out the match with three singles victories in a row coming from Claire Reifeis, Marina Cozac and Hayley Haakenstad.

 

Reifeis Impressive at No. 2:

Junior, Claire Reifeis improved to 13-5 after two Big Ten wins this past weekend. The Indianapolis, Ind., native kicked off her successful weekend with a 7-6, 7-5 win over No. 71 Isabelle Boulais of Ohio State.

 

After dropping the first set to Penn State’s Olivia Rohrabacher, 4-6, Reifeis bounced back to steal the second set, 6-4. The match went to a third set super-tiebreaker where Reifeis came out on top, 10-5. With 13 total singles wins, Reifeis holds the most individual wins in the Husker lineup.

 

Cozac Goes 2-0 at No. 4:

Senior, Marina Cozac had an impressive weekend on the singles court vs. Ohio State and Penn State. The senior from Chicago, Ill., took care of business against the Buckeyes with a 6-0, 7-5 over Danielle Wolf of OSU. On Sunday, Cozac handled Frederikke Svarre of Penn State, recording a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.

 

Scouting Indiana:

The Hoosiers head into Lincoln with a 12-7 record on the season and a 2-2 mark in the Big Ten.  Indiana enters the Dillon Tennis Center coming off of a 5-2 win over Michigan State at home. On March 8, Indiana took down then No. 31 Illinois by a score of 4-3.

 

Senior, Madison Appel has had a successful career at No. 1 singles for the Hoosiers. In 2018, she went 25-10 at the No. 1 spot. On March 8, Appel recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 57 Asuka Kawai of Illinois. The Hoosiers are led by head coach Ramiro Azcui, who served as Indiana’s associate head coach for 24 years and was then promoted to the head coaching position in 2017. In 2018, the Huskers beat the Hoosiers, 6-1 in Bloomington, Ind.

 

Scouting Purdue:

The Boilermakers enter Sunday’s matchup with a 5-10 record on the year and an 0-4 record in Big Ten play. In 2018, the Boilermakers put together a 14-10 season along with an appearance in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament in Minneapolis, Minn. So far in 2019, Purdue took down No. 12 Ole Miss on the road, 4-3.

 

Purdue is led by 12th year Head Coach Laura Glitz. From 2012-2015, Glitz coached the Boilermakers to four consecutive NCAA Championship appearances, as well as a Big Ten Championship in 2012.

 

Last season, the Big Red fell to Purdue, 4-3, on the road in West Lafayette, Ind.
