Seven Pac-12, two Big Ten, one Big 12 and one SEC team make up nearly half of the field. Five teams are ranked in the top 25 byGolfstat.com and 13 are ranked in the top 50.
Hear from the Huskers:
With the university being on spring break last week, the Huskers got to travel to Scottsdale, Ariz., to play at several different golf courses in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area.
Senior Jackson Wendling notched his first top-20 finish of the season on March 12 at the San Diego Lamkin Classic, finishing in first place of all Huskers on the leaderboard. He talked about what he worked on during the team’s spring break trip.
“We got to see a bunch of different visuals and try different club options off the tee that we may see at Stanford,” Wendling said. “Preparing to hit everything from drivers to long irons and 3-wood’s off the tee was good practice. I got to see what worked and what didn’t so I would be all set to go this weekend.”
Cameron Jones, a junior from Perth, Australia, got to participate in his first stroke play tournament of the year a couple weeks back in San Diego. He struggled a bit in round one but came back to shoot a 74 (+2) in the second round. Jones spoke about the pros and cons of his performance.
“The two rounds where I shot 77, there were just two or three bad holes in each round,” Jones said. “I got off to a slow start on the first day, but I was proud of how I grinded out a good rest of the round and played a really nice second round.”
Yankton, S.D., native Jace Guthmiller says that the team’s preparation for The Goodwin has been different than its preparation for the Lamkin Classic because they have just a two-day turnaround from playing outside in Arizona.
“We’re in a different situation this week,” Guthmiller said. “We’ve been able to get outside and play a lot of golf, and we really haven’t been indoors at all. It’s good to be outside on real grass and be able to see the ball fly. We’re all locked in and ready to go, we’re looking forward to a great performance this weekend.”
Husker Hits:
-This will be the second straight tournament that the starting lineup will have Jay Cottam, Jace Guthmiller, Cameron Jones, Tanner Owen and Jackson Wendling. They combined to shoot 890 (+26) at the Lamkin San Diego Classic.
-Junior Tanner Owen leads NU with a 73.00 stroke average and two top-25 finishes this year.
-Cameron Jones got his first tournament start of the year at the Lamkin San Diego Classic, shooting a 228 (+12) over 54-holes. The best performance of his career came at last year’s Big Ten Championships, where he led all Huskers by shooting a 219 (+9) to finish 28th.
-Graduate transfer Jay Cottam fired three consecutive 75’s (+3) in his first stroke play tournament as a Husker in San Diego.
