Four Huskers Garner All-American Honors

Pittsburgh, Pa. – For the second time in three years, the Nebraska wrestling team had four grapplers garner All-America honors as Chad Red Jr. (141), Tyler Berger (157), Isaiah White (165) and Mikey Labriola (174) clinched their spots in the top eight on Friday. As a team, the Huskers enter Saturday’s final two sessions in seventh place with 51 team points.

 

Chad Red Jr. (141) earned his second straight All-America honor with a victory in the consolation round of 12. Isaiah White (165) and Mikey Labriola (174) became first-time All-Americans with victories over Te-Shan Campell (Ohio State) and Dylan Lydy (Purdue), respectively.

 

Berger Advances to National Championship Match:

Tyler Berger scored two takedowns in a 5-3 win over Iowa’s #6 Kaleb Young and let out a yell of excitement as he clinched his first trip to the national final on Friday evening. The Prineville, Ore., native will take on Penn State’s #1 Jason Nolf for the third time this season tomorrow night as he attempts to become the first Husker to win a national title since Jordan Burroughs (165) in 2011.

 

Red Jr. Takes Second Straight All-America Honor:

#16 Chad Red Jr. rode a first period takedown of Iowa’s #22 Max Murin to a convincing 4-1 victory in the consolation round of 12 on Friday evening. The sophomore from Indianapolis, Ind., clinched his second All-America honor in as many years with the win.

 

Red Jr., ended up losing his consolation quarterfinal match to Minnesota’s #7 Mitch McKee in a 6-2 decision. He’ll compete in the seventh-place bout during tomorrow morning’s Session V.

 

White and Labriola Earn All-America Honors for the First Time:

#7 Isaiah White defeated Ohio State’s #21 Te-Shan Campbell for the fourth time this season during Session IV on Friday night. However, this win had more meaning to it. Tied 2-2 after three periods, the two grapplers headed to overtime, where White eventually won in the first tiebreaker to earn his first All-America honor. White went on to win his consolation quarterfinal match over UNI’s #11 Bryce Steiert in a 5-0 decision.

 

Redshirt freshman #10 Mikey Labriola was able to grind out a 4-3 victory in the second tiebreaker over Purdue’s #11 Dylan Lydy in the consolation round of 12 to garner All-America status in his first year as a starter. The Easton, Pa., native then advanced to the consolation quarterfinals where he avenged his two losses at the Big Ten Championships to Minnesota’s #9 Devin Skatzka. A takedown late in the third period put Labriola up for good as he took a 7-5 decision.

 

Both. White and Labriola will compete in the consolation semifinals tomorrow morning in Session V. The worst they can finish is sixth and the best they can finish is third.

 

Venz Falls Short in Session IV:

Taylor Venz, a fourth-place finisher at last year’s NCAA Championships as a redshirt freshman, fell one match short of garnering All-America status for the second straight season. The No. 9 seed at 184 pounds, Venz dropped a 5-4 decision to #3 Zachary Zavatsky (Virginia Tech). The bout was tied 4-4 after three periods, but Zavatsky tacked on a point for riding time.

 

Up Next:

Session V will begin at 11 a.m. EST (10 a.m. CT) tomorrow morning and television coverage will be had by ESPNU and Watch ESPN. Session V will consist of the consolation semifinals, 7th place, 5th place and 3rd place matches.

 

Session VI will begin at 7 p.m. EST (6 p.m. CT) and will consist of all 10 national championship bouts.
