The No. 9 Nebraska rifle team will travel to Morgantown, W. Va. to take on the third-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers on Sunday, Oct. 21. Shooting action will begin at 7 a.m.
Last Time Out
The Huskers took the range in Fairbanks, Alaska last weekend in matches against Ohio State and Alaska. Despite outscoring Ohio State 2,355-2,352, NU never recovered from a five-point deficit in smallbore and ultimately lost to the Buckeyes 4,656-4,658. Emily Cheramie led the team in smallbore with 581, while Samantha Peterson was out front in air rifle with 590. Rachel Yager also posted a career-high 580 in smallbore. Nebraska improved its score the next day, but it wasn’t enough against top-ranked Alaska. The Huskers fell short 4,662-4,693. Three of the top five smallbore scores belonged to Nebraska, led by Bailey Powell’s personal-best score of 581. Elizabeth Lorentz and Samantha Peterson paced the Huskers in air rifle, each firing a mark of 590.
Scouting the Mountaineers
West Virginia heads into the weekend with a 2-0 record. The Mountaineers defeated Akron on the road and Memphis at home. Nebraska holds a 7-35 record against West Virginia, with the last victory occurring in 2008. Shooters to watch include senior Ginny Thrasher and junior Milica Babic. Thrasher is a gold-medalist Olympian that recorded one perfect 600 score and three 599 marks in air rifle last season. Babic is a two-time All-American that was the NCAA Air Rifle Champion in 2017. The Mountaineers are led by head coach Jon Hammond, who has been with the team since 2006.
