Huskers Journey to UNLV Collegiate Showdown

The Nebraska women’s golf team returns to action for the UNLV Collegiate Showdown in Boulder City, Nev., Oct. 21-23.  

UNLV hosts a 17-team field on the par-72, 6,343-yard layout of the Boulder Creek Golf Club. Play begins Sunday with a shotgun start at 2 p.m. (CT). The tournament continues with Monday’s second round with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. (CT), before Tuesday’s final round at 10 a.m. (CT).  

The Rebels will look to defend last year’s tournament title against a solid field that includes seven top-100 teams in the current GolfStat national rankings. Oregon State enters as the favorite at No. 29 nationally, while Augusta (51) and Colorado State (62) join the Beavers in the top 75.

The UNLV Collegiate Showdown provides the young Huskers with a chance to climb into the top 100 with wins against several teams in front of them in the rankings, including No. 97 Nevada, No. 89 Idaho, No. 87 Tulsa and No. 85 UNLV. 

Freshman Vanessa Bouvet (Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei) and junior Kate Smith (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) lead the Huskers to Nevada. Bouvet owns a team-best 74.44 stroke average through nine rounds on the season, including three rounds at or below par (68, 69, 72). Bouvet opened her college career with a third-place finish at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic (Sept. 17-19).

Smith, who is Nebraska’s career stroke average leader, is right behind Bouvet this season with a 74.56 average through nine rounds. Smith tied for sixth at the Ptarmigan Ram to open the season with the 10th top-10 finish of her college career. 

Fellow junior Haley Thiele (Wahoo, Neb.) has added a solid 75.67 stroke average through three tournaments, including a tie for 21st at the Golfweek Conference Challenge (Sept. 24-26).
