Purdue Player Postgame Quotes
Nebraska vs. Purdue Memorial Stadium (Lincoln, Neb.)
Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018

David Blough
Senior, Quarterback
On getting a win at Nebraska
“It’s big. It’s big for our program. Nebraska, no matter what, at home is a tough team to beat, whatever their record is. We knew we had to come and do the little things right and take care of the football. We had some penalties go our way and I think it ended [up] showing a performance that our offense had in us. Our defense played great down at the end of the game and won it for us.”

On how the team responded after three losses
“When I sit there and think about it, we trust our scripted plays. Coach Brohm called the plays and they came down and made some good plays and started up 7-0 on us. We knew that we’d have to score some points. As an offense, we kind of found a good rhythm, so we’re good. It was cool to see playmakers step up. Obviously Brycen [Hopkins], Rondale [Moore], those guys were spectacular. One sack on 48 drop-backs, so a good job by our O-line also.

On being aggressive
“It’s everybody. It’s people coming over to the sideline and saying ‘Hey, we got this on the outside,’ or ‘We got this on the inside, let’s get the ball to Rondale [Moore] on the slant and let him go do his thing.’ It’s people communicating and I think that’s what’s given us some success.”

On differences of Nebraska’s 2017 and 2018 defense
“It’s a completely different scheme, obviously. Coach Frost and their staff do a great job. They’re trying to get their players in a position to be successful and our guys made some plays. That’s the difference between this year and last year. Last year we didn’t make very many plays and we couldn’t throw the ball very well. It helps when you get a freshman like Rondale Moore who can beat man coverage. That’s what they like to do a lot, so they had to take two guys to him and now [Brycen] Hopkins has a big day and the running backs did a good job running out of the backfield and catching passes.”

On what it means to beat Nebraska
“It means a lot to me. It’s my first win as a college quarterback in 2015, and now it’s my most recent one. We’ve lost some tough ones to them. Last year they threw that to us so we felt that. We knew that we had a lot riding on us and we wouldn’t let it happen again. The defense in that fourth quarter really shut them down and made it tough on them to get anything going.

Brycen Hopkins
Junior, Tight End
On how the team has changed from the past games
“We wanted to be aggressive even in that game (against Eastern Michigan.) But I think the focal point has increased. We want more aggression. We don’t want to back down and we don’t want to be conservative, which is a big thing that we talk about before each game. I think we have done a good job the past few games of really taking chances, taking risks, and using who we have out on the field up to their ability.”

On freshman wide receiver Rondale Moore
“He does take a lot of the attention away from us and we like that. Even when they have they’re on us, it’s still hard to cover him. He is a stud.”

On the bye week
“We are definitely still hungry. We don’t even really consider this a week off, the only difference is that we don’t have a game. We are still going to be practicing hard, maybe even harder than what we usually do because we won’t have a game to rest up for or anything. We will get a lot of rehab in and take it slow at times. Just because we don’t have a game this week doesn’t mean we aren’t preparing for them right now.”

On what the win means to the team
“It definitely means a lot to us. I know that that loss last year as motivation. Throughout the game, we kept reiterating that they beat us last year. It was a really close game so don’t let it happen again. It was just a big part of our motivation.”

On Nebraska as an opponent
“It definitely feels better. We love the fans and we knew to come in that they were going to be nice. They’re always nice and it is just fun to stay here. I don’t know what the fans think about the refs but it was a good game. It always feels good to come in and win over a school that has such good tradition and such good history in the football program. It just makes it that much better.”

On the Nebraska fans
“It is overwhelming out there. It gets loud and you can’t hear anything and we have been practicing with that all week.”

On Head Coach Jeff Brohm
“He holds us to a higher expectation than we ever thought (possible). He has really opened our eyes to our capabilities and we really appreciate it. This is just the start. We just plan on moving forward and winning even bigger games than this.”

On winning at Nebraska
“First and foremost I want to give credit to them. They set a great environment and they played really hard. They have some great talent out there. We had to fight the whole game. So it’s a great feeling to get a win on the road in that type of environment against that type of team and to show that we can respond against adversity when things started going their way more in the second half. We had to respond to it, so it gives me confidence in my teammates and what we can do with our coaches and everything.”

On the message after Nebraska’s first drive
“We had to adjust to the speed. We knew they were going to go tempo. Some of the guys, including myself… it was going really fast and we had to get the calls in, so we had to get set. They did a great job of doing what offenses are supposed to do and keep the defenses on the heels. After that happened, we said ‘No, this is not happening. We need to buckle down and we need to do our job and lock in and decompress a little bit,’ because everyone was going crazy. We had to just relax a little bit and get the call and do our job. We started doing that more. We played pretty good throughout the rest of the first half and in the second half they kind of got back at us again. But then we came back and were able to stop them.”

On the team responding
“Like I said last week, even though we were 0-3 we never lost faith and never lost belief. We never lost confidence and when they scored on us, it wasn’t like we got our heads down. We all responded on the sideline. We said ‘That was kind of a fluke. Now it’s time to start playing for real.’ It was kind of like a boxing match where they kind of jabbed and woke us up a little bit, and now it’s time to fight for real. I thought we did good and that says a lot about our team and the type of leaders and guys we have that we can respond to that kind of 0-3 start and a 7-0 start to the game.”

On what it means to beat Nebraska
“The historical prominence of Nebraska is amazing. Coach [Nick] Holt was talking about some of the guys that played at Nebraska and stuff and some of the history they have. They sell out almost all their games, I think they had almost 90,000 at the game today. It’s a great environment for us to play in against a Big Ten team. They have a lot of good talent too, so they’re a good football team.”
