Durham, N.C. - The Nebraska men's golf team concluded the final day of competition at the Duke/Rod Myers Invitational on Sunday. The Huskers finished with a team total of 914 after a third round score of 304, coming in 13th place overall.
Penn State, the only other Big Ten team in the field, took home the title with a final score of 852. Duke (854), North Carolina (854), Florida State (860) and Cincinnati (866) rounded out the top five.
Senior Jackson Wendling led the Huskers with a score of 226 after three rounds of play. He finished tied for 47th overall.
Jace Guthmiller finished off the tournament by shooting a 74 on Sunday, capping off his best performance of the two-day event. He tied for 63rd overall with fellow senior Dylan McCabe, who shot a 73 in the second round on Saturday before finishing the weekend with a 79 on Sunday afternoon. McCabe nearly tied his career-low score of 71 in the second round on Saturday, but came up just two strokes shy.
Junior Tanner Owen hit for a score of 228 on the weekend to finish tied for 53rd. His best showing came on Sunday as he finished off the tournament with a solid 74.
Tristan Nelko, the lone underclassman in the Husker lineup, made his collegiate debut this weekend at the Duke/Rod Myers Invitational. He started out strong with a 74 in the first round before shooting a 78 and an 83 in the final two rounds. A freshman from Plymouth, Minn., Nelko secured the Minnesota Individual State Championship last spring after tying the state record lowest stroke of 139.
The Huskers will travel home to prepare for the Cardinal Regional Challenge at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Louisville, Ky. The tournament will take place Friday, Sept. 14 through Sunday, Sept. 16. Be sure to head back to Huskers.com later this week for a full preview.
