Senior Linebacker Luke Gifford

On Saturday night’s game cancellation
“It was a buzzkill to say the least. Everybody’s pumped, excited and to have that happen is pretty frustrating. I’m pretty proud of the guys the way everyone handled it. And then coming out to work today, we had a great day today. I think we can take some good out of it. Everyone’s feeling fresh still and ready to roll for this week.”

On potential rescheduling for Sunday morning
“Yeah, that’s what we originally had planned on going home. We didn’t know it wasn’t finalized yet or anything like that. We were all sent home with the plan to play on Sunday.”

On team during the delay
“Honestly just sitting there. There wasn’t much we could do, but mess around in the locker room. And trying to stay focused. That’s tough especially because you never know what’s going to happen with the weather. We could’ve been back out there. We were trying to keep focused but also still stay loose and kind of have a good time.

On build up to his senior season
“It was definitely hard. All the emotions and everything throughout the day. Sitting in the hotel and sit there all day waiting for a night game. And to have it be canceled, it sucks. Like I said earlier, we handled it really well and you could tell the team’s ready to roll this week.”

On team being back at practice today
“We’ve only had two Monday practices obviously, but, this Monday was really solid. We did a lot of good things. We got a good jump on the game plan. I think the coaches are pretty happy with where we’re at.”

On being notified Akron game was not rescheduled
“They sent us a text when we were on our way home. Coaches sent us a mass text and let us know that we wouldn’t be playing.”

On when team was notified game was not rescheduled
“It was literally right as the news came out that everybody else got it.”

On Frost’s message to move past the cancellation
“Exactly that. We can’t dwell on the past or anything that happened. It’s obviously frustrating. You want to have 12 games. It sucks but all we can do is look to Colorado and start a game plan.”

On the upcoming Colorado game
“They look like a good team. We’re going to really have to get in the film and I think we have a good game plan so far. We had a good first day of preparation so we’re on a good track.”

On Colorado's quarterback
“He’s a good player. They have a lot of good players on offense, some really good threats. We’re going to have to be really keyed in to what we’re doing.”

On his memories of Nebraska playing Colorado as conference rivals
“To be able to play Colorado is pretty cool for me. Growing up this was the rivalry game. And I remember the game, I don’t remember what year it was, but [Ndamukong] Suh’s pick and [former NU kicker] Alex Henery’s field goal to win it, from the 50. I was sitting up in East Stadium watching it. It was pretty cool, I’m excited to be able to play against them.”

On how he was named captain
“We had a team vote. And then Coach Frost came in and let us know in a team meeting. I can’t even explain it to you. Literally a dream come true. I’ve been thinking about it ever since I was little and to know that’s what the guys think of me and that I’m able to represent them is awesome."

On how long he’ll be captain
“They told us when they announced them that it was season long. Honestly we didn’t know any more than you guys did until we had the vote. It was a surprise.”

On being captain alongside Jerald Foster in high school
“Yeah we were. For us two it was pretty cool. It was a cool experience.”

On what the team did Sunday in place of recapping the game
“Yesterday kind of gave us time to come in and get some meals. And a lot of guys started watching film and stuff. If you use it right it’s another day for preparation. The way practice went today, I think a lot of guys did use it for preparation. We’re really happy with how we got the jumpstart on things.”

On Colorado’s offense
“First of all, they've got a couple guys that are big, deep threats and can take it to the house at any time. And like you said, playing against our offense every day in practice helps us a lot with tempo and things like that, which I think is one of the bigger weapons that they have. From that standpoint we’ll be ready to roll and we’re excited about it."
