Lincoln – The Nebraska women’s tennis team moved up to No. 44 in the ITA national rankings, released on Tuesday. The Huskers climbed in the poll thanks to a three-match winning streak and a fourth-place finish in the competitive Big Ten Conference. The 18-6 Huskers will get their first taste of postseason competition on Friday when they take on No. 19 Illinois in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.
Nebraska has now been ranked in the ITA poll for 10 consecutive weeks. NU was ranked as high as No. 21 in mid-March, which marked the Huskers' highest ranking since 2013, when Nebraska advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The Huskers own three wins over teams ranked in this week's ITA poll (No. 28 Ohio State, No. 37 Wichita State and No. 42 Kansas State), while three of Nebraska's six losses have come to teams ranked in the top 25 (No. 1 Vanderbilt, No. 20 Virginia and No. 23 Michigan). The Big Red has won five of its last six matches, including road wins at Indiana (6-1) and Rutgers (5-2) and home victories against Iowa (4-0), Wisconsin (4-0) and Minnesota (4-3).
Thanks to the strong finish, Nebraska finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Big Ten standings with a 7-4 record in league play. The Huskers tied with No. 28 Ohio State and Purdue in the conference standings and went 1-1 against that duo on the road, defeating the Buckeyes and falling to the Boilermakers by a close 4-3 decision. Nebraska’s fourth-place conference finish and No. 6 tournament seed are the highest since 2013.
