No. 38 Nebraska Welcomes Penn State Sunday

Lincoln – The No. 38 Nebraska women’s tennis team will be home for Big Ten Conference tennis action this weekend, as the Huskers take on the Penn State Nittany Lions at the Dillon Tennis Center on Sunday, March 25 at 11 a.m. Admission to the match is free.

Penn State (6-7) ventures to Nebraska with a 1-1 Big Ten mark. The Nittany Lions are coming off a 5-2 home victory over Iowa in University Park. Penn State also owns wins over Buffalo, Marshall, Temple, Towson and Navy. The Nittany Lions suffered losses to Columbia, James Madison, Pittsburgh, Princeton, Memphis, UCF and Big Ten Conference rival Ohio State (Feb. 22).

The Huskers and Penn State are tied at three wins apiece in all-time series between the two schools in women's tennis, including Nebraska's 5-2 victory in Lincoln on April 7, 2017. Returners Claire Reifeis, Paula Del Cueto Castillo, Katerina Matysova, Hayley Haakenstad and Vasanti Shinde all roared past their Nittany Lions opponents in singles matches last season.

The Huskers (12-4, 1-2 Big Ten) are looking to bounce back from back-to-back Big Ten losses to Michigan State (4-2) and No. 34 Michigan (4-3) last weekend. Nebraska opened Big Ten play with a 4-3 win at No. 19 Ohio State on March 7. The Huskers are one of five Big Ten teams in this week's ITA Top 50 team rankings, including No. 5 Northwestern, No. 7 Illinois, No. 27 Ohio State, No. 29 Michigan and No. 38 Nebraska.

Senior Brianna Lashway has played out of the No. 1 singles position for most of the season so far, carrying a 5-3 record this spring. She also has teamed with Del Cueto Castillo for a strong 10-3 mark at No. 1 doubles, including wins against Michigan and Michigan State last weekend.

Reifeis has been solid out of primarily the No. 2 spot this season. The sophomore owns a 12-3 singles mark and a 10-3 doubles mark with fellow sophomore Haakenstad this spring.

Shinde, a junior, has been strong at the No. 3 spot with a 6-4 singles record and an impressive 12-1 doubles mark with senior Katerina Matysova. The duo dropped their first match together this spring against Michigan State. Matysova has added a 12-2 mark playing primarily out of the No. 5 spot in the Husker lineup, including a pair of straight-set wins over her opponents from both Ohio State and Michigan.
