No. 21 Nebraska Hosts B1G Michigan Opponents

Lincoln, Neb. – The No. 21 Nebraska women’s tennis team rolls out its next two rounds of Big Ten Conference play with matches against Michigan State and No. 34 Michigan this weekend. The 12-2 Huskers will host the Spartans at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by a 11 a.m. match on Sunday against the Wolverines. Admission to the Dillon Tennis Center is free.

The Spartans open conference play with Friday’s match in Lincoln, hoping to build off of their 5-2 win over Florida Gulf Coast last Friday. Michigan State is 9-3 in its season, having also collected wins over DePaul, Akron, Utah State, Furman, Detroit Mercy, Toledo, Grand Canyon and Xavier. The Spartans’ losses come from 4-0 sweeps by Georgia and Auburn and a tight 4-3 victory by South Florida on March 7. In the all-time series record, Michigan State leads Nebraska 5-2 after a 4-0 sweep of the Huskers in East Lansing, Mich., in 2017.

On Sunday, the Big Red takes on its fourth nationally ranked opponent of the season in its matchup with the No. 34 Wolverines. Michigan faces Nebraska following a match at Iowa at 1 p.m. on Friday, where it seeks to find a switch of pace in its five-match losing streak. The Wolverines are 4-8 on the season, holding victories over Wisconsin, Tulsa, Gonzaga and Kansas. Michigan has not been able to pull off a win against the five nationally ranked opponents it has faced so far this season, including No. 1 North Carolina, whom the Wolverines fell to, 4-1, on Feb. 18. Nebraska has yet to beat Michigan, with the Wolverines leading all-time series 6-0 after the formerly No. 9-ranked team led a 7-0 sweep of the Huskers last year.

The matches at the Dillon Tennis Center will feature multiple fan giveaways this weekend, as Nebraska Popsockets will be available for the first 100 fans, and all fans will be welcomed to grab the team’s first two player cards of the season. On Sunday, fans will be welcomed to free coffee and donuts, as well as the next two player cards for the team. Live performances for the national anthem will also begin on Friday.
